Wykradłszy podstępem klucze, penetruje mieszkanie ofiary w poszukiwaniu śladów zbrodni, gdy pojawia się w nim jasnowłosa kobieta z walizką, jak gdyby wracała z podróży. Na szczęście Calvinowi udaje się wymknąć niepostrzeżenie. Teraz daje taśmę swojemu przyjacielowi - specjaliście od komputerów, aby spróbował uzyskać z niej wyraźny wizerunek mordercy. Sam nieustannie obserwuje przez lornetkę lokatorkę z naprzeciwka. I znów widzi owego mężczyznę, który podchodzi do śpiącej akurat dziewczyny. Zdenerwowany dzwoni na policję, ale zamiast sceny zbrodni za oknem rozgrywa się scena miłosna. Nieco zdezorientowany, lecz uparty profesor dąży do wyjaśnienia zagadki.
