Brocksi-Quartett (F. Brocksieper, schlagzeug; P.Angeli, piano; J.Bruyere, posaune; O.Tittman, bass) - Ewig denke ich an dich (I Endlessly Think Of You) (P.Angeli), Brunswick 1942 ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------
Fritz "Freddie" BROCKSIEPER (1912 in Istanbul, Türkei; 1990 München) German Jazz-Musician, , trumpeter and bandleader. Since 1930 he professionally performed in Nürnberg, to move to Berlin in 1939. He played with the famous jazz bands of the time: Goldenen Sieben (1939), Benny de Weille (1940), Willy Berking (1940--1941), and also in the nazi-propaganda Bigband Charlie and His Orchestra (Nazi-controlled band, whose main task was to give evidence to the Word that jazz music was not forbidden in the Third Reich. The sad paradox was, that Fred Brocksieper's mother was a Greek Jew). The Brocksi -- (or Brocksieper -) Quartett was his own jazz group he recorded with for Brunswick during the war time. His style of the trumpet play is compared with that of Gene Krupa's. The well known musicians that feature in the Brocksi-Quartet are: Pier Angeli (piano) and the bass player O.Tittmann.

Eine kleine Sehnsucht, Tango-Einlage zu der Komödie "Phaea" (Friedrich Holländer) - Tango-Kapelle Komor (Géza Komor), Refrainges.: Kurt Mühlhardt, Tri-Ergon 1930 -------------------------------
Friedrich Holländer (October 18, 1896- January 18, 1976) was a German composer born in London. He was the son of composer Victor Hollander. The family returned to Germany and Frederick was educated at the Berlin Conservatory. By the age of 18 he had become an associate conductor at the Prague Opera House. After studying in Berlin, he composed music for productions by Max Reinhardt . (Reinhardt's production of the comedy „Phaea" -- based on the story by Fritz von Unruh, with F.Holländer's music -- was presented in Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1930). F. Holländer also became involved in cabaret and wrote music for the film (The Blue Angel, 1930). He left Nazi Germany and emigrated to the United States of America where he wrote the music for over a hundred films, including Destry Rides Again (1939), A Foreign Affair (1948), The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953 Academy Award nomination) and Sabrina (1954). Many of his songs were made famous by Marlene Dietrich. He can be seen as the piano accompanist in A Foreign Affair. He received four Academy Award nominations for composition . In 1956 he returned to Germany, and died in Munich in 1976

Veronika, der Lenz ist da!(Walter Jurmann / Fritz Rotter) - voc. & piano Hermann Leopoldi, Electrola 1930 --------------------------------
"Veronika, der Lenz ist da" (Veronica, Spring Has Come) is a popular 1920s song by Walter Jurmann. Covered countless times, probably the best known version is by the German sextet, the Comedian Harmonists. Here, that evergreen is performed by the Viennese comedian from inter-war period, Hermann Leopoldi. --------------------------------
Hermann LEOPOLDI (né Hermann Cohn) b: 1888, Vienna, Austria. d: 1959, Vienna, Austria - Composer / Cabaret Singer and Pianist. As a child, he studied piano with his father -a professional musician. After attending High School and some commercial training Hermann decided to make music his career, and found work as a pianist. In 1911 he married Eugenie Kraus, with whom he had two children, and after the First World War he began his career in Vienna, working first as a piano humorist and he soon became a 'steady' in the Viennese cabarets. He composed songs - in the Viennese style, many with lyrics by Peter Herz. One such, entitled "In a Small Cafe in Hernals" might be his most popular song. In 1925 he opened -- with the Conférencier Fritz Wiesenthal -- a „Kabarett Leopoldi-Wiesenthal", in short „L.W." -- where performed the best Vienna actors and comedians, Charlotte Waldow, Franzi Ressel, Armin Berg, Hans Moser, Szöke Szakall, Max Hansen, Fritz Grünbaum, Karl Valentin. Unfoirtunately, the economical crisis in Austria made him clone the business and go to Berlina where he cut his first records; many more followed -into the 1950s. In the late 1920/early 1930s he was playing in Berlin together with Betja Milskaja - the Jewish cabaret star, also coming from Vienna -- and they toured to Prague, Paris, and Bucharest. After the Nazi Annexation of Austria, he was arrested and, from 1938 to 1939, was first in the Dachau concentration camp, and later in the Buchenwald concentration camp. There he, together with the lyricist Fritz Löhner - Beda, composed the famous "Buchenwald Song". In 1942, Loehner Beda was murdered in Auschwitz, but Leopoldi, with the help of the huge bribe (paid by his wife's family), managed to leave Germany, and found a repose in the USA. In New York he again began to compose Viennese songs, together with other exiled artists. In 1947, he returned to his hometown, Vienna, where his artistic ability could express itself with old and new songs. --------------------------

Komm zurück (J'attendrai)(Dino Olivieri/Ralph M. Siegel) - Hans Georg Schütz m.s. Orchester, Refraingesang: Rudi Schuricke, Grammophon 1939 ---------------------------------- One of the most beautiful European dance tunes ever composed: "J'attendrai" (Italian "Tornerai", German "Komm zurück") was originally composed by an Italian, Dino Olivieri; but for some reason, the most beautiful, sensitive, melancholic interpretations of that huge international hit of the Summer 1939 - were recorded by the nazi-Germany dance bands (e.g. Kurt Widmann, Michael Jary, Kurt Hohenberger and dozens of others). Perhaps, that tune's calmness and sweetness was the farewell German soul bid to its better part, just a few months before the worse part started the greatest catastrophe in the history of the civilisation..? ------------------------------------
Hans Georg Schütz (b.1912 in Stettin - d.1976 in Hemmoor) German composer, pianist and accordionist. From late 1930 until 1960s he lead his own band and made numerous popular dance music recordings for Deutsche Grammophon between 1939-43. Many of them were popularised among nazi soldiers in all European fronts, being diffused on the air by the powerful radio stadion Soldatensender Belgrad.

Andy Sannella und sein All Star Orchester mit Refraingesang - Bubbling Over With Love (Tanzmuzik und Liebe); (Renée Russell -Milton Ager), Electrola 1931 (Germany) -----------------------------------
Andy SANNELLA (Anthony G. Sannella) -- his name often shows up missing one „n" - was a bandleader, saxophonist, clarinetist and Hawaiian steel guitarist of American-Italian origin, who also played cello and bass. He was the musician who -- in addition to leading his own bands - probably played as a sideman in more orchestras than any other musician in American jazz history. E.g. in The Virginians, Sannella was part of a combo with several brilliant players from late '20s: violinist Lou Raderman, banjoist Harry Reser and pianist Milt Rettenberg. One of the greatest groups of this era, Art Gillham's Southland Syncopators, the Columbia "house musicians", included Sannella along with with the famous trumpeter Red Nichols, as well as the young clarinetist Benny Goodman. There were also credits with artists such as Bing Crosby and Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards. Cliff Edwards & His Hot Combination featured Sannella on alto sax and cello, jamming alongside two giants -- the violinist Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang. Andy Sannella died in 1962.

Abe Lyman's California Ambassador Hotel Orchestra, voc. Ed Landry - Never Swat a Fly (DeSylva /Brown/Henderson), Brunswick 1930 ------------------------------------------------------------ ----
Abe LYMAN (whose real name was Simon) started out as a drummer. His brother, Mike, was the owner of the Trent Cafe In Los Angeles, where Bing Crosby got his first professional job. Never an outstanding conductor, Lyman never-the-less had a popular dance band. In the 'roaring twenties' Lyman and Gus Arnheim started their career as joint leaders of the "Syncopated Five" band. They co-wrote "I Cried for You" while with this group. After splitting, Arnheim went on to lead his own band at the famed Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, while Abe went on to form his own orchestra too. From his first band, in the '20s, Abe was still conducting into the '40s. He even put together a new band in 1943 with Sy Zentner and Ray Heath on trombones, Marty Gold on violin, Wolffe Tannenbaum -- sax. His wife Rose Blane, was also in the band.

Jesienne róże (Autumn Roses) (Artur Gold / Andrzej Włast) Tango z rewii „Przebój Warszawy"
Jesienne róże (Autumn Roses) (Artur Gold / Andrzej Włast) Tango z rewii „Przebój Warszawy" w teatrze „Morskie Oko" (Tango from the theatre „Morskie Oko" revue: „The Hit Of Warsaw") -- Orkiestra taneczna „Odeon", refren: Tola Mankiewiczówna, Odeon 1932 -------------------------------------
Tola MANKIEWICZÓWNA (née Teodora Oleksy), born in 1901 near Łomża, Poland, died in 1985, Warsaw. After her studies in Warsaw Conservatory (piano) she moved for 3 years to Milan, Italy to study operatic singing. She continued studies in Poland under the guidance of the famous soprano, Janina Korolewicz-Waydowa. From 1929 to 1931 Mankiewiczówna performed in Warsaw Opera (e.g. Micaela in Bizet's „Carmen", Margarethe in Gounod's „Faust", and at chances she took roles in Warsaw Operetta. After her performance in Oskar Strauss' „The Charm of Waltz" Tola Mankiewiczówna received such enthusiastic rewievs, that she decided to quit her operatic career and devoted herself fully to the lighter Muse. In 1932 she had her debut in the revue theatre „Morskie Oko", immediately becoming the favourite singer of Warsaw. In the same year she started her movie career in a comedy „10 Percent For Me". The huge success encouraged movie producers to continue engaging her in the music comedies e.g. „Co mój mąż robi w nocy?"(What My Husband Does At Nights? 1934), „Manewry miłosne" (The Love Manoeuvres, 1935) or „Pani minister tańczy"(Madame Minister Dances, 1937; see http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=uXWi_TH1JvU During WWII Mankiewiczówna worked and sung in the artists' cafe „U Aktorek", taking part in the Polish actors' boycott of the nazi-controlled stages of Warsaw. After the war, without success she tried to regain her position, acting in the provincial theatres and cabarets. The communist regime did not promote the „burgeois" genre of her kind, and the Polish audience lost interest in the roles of „grande dames". Better reception she had abroad, during her „nostalgia" performances in front of the remains of her prewar fans, in the emmigrant clubs in London, Paris or New York. In last decades of her life she worked in Warsaw as a lower clerk. --------------------------------
