My little tribute to Alicia and U2. Ain't nothing like the real thing? Or even better than the real thing?
I made this track 3 days earlier before she did a 30 minutes promotional free concert in Tokyo on Nov 29, 2007, where she played a special stripped version of No One with the W.O.W.Y. bass and guitar riffs, accompanied by 3 musicians from her band (gt, bass, keys). It was an amazing coincidence and I just couldn't believe my ears.
Now you get a real "stripped" (to the bone) version of No One. If Prince walks away with his Guitar, she will follow??

This is a re-upload of the one I posted on November 29, 2007, which was my first vid on YouTube. It got about 46,000 views until April 16, 2008 when my account got deleted.
It was an instant remix made in half a day and I know it's got some problems. I think I should redo it some time.
My first impression of No One was actually like "hey, it's like a U2 song!". Then, I remembered WOWY, and Bob Marley, The Beatles, Teddy Bears...which is a great history of songs about LOVE.
There should be thousands of songs with the same chord progression (1-5-6-4). Here's the tip of the iceberg. How long must they play these chords???
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours (2008) Colbie Caillat - Realize (2007) Mika - Happy Ending (2007) Linkin Park - Shadow of the Day (2007) Jordin Sparks - Tatoo (2007) Alicia Keys - No One (2007) Akon - Sorry, Blame It On Me (2007) Akon - Don't Matter (2006) Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Your Guardian Angel (2006) Gary Jules - Falling Awake (2006) Hellogoodbye - Here (In Your Arms) (2006) Fort Minor - Where'd You Go (2005) James Blunt - You're Beautiful (2005) The All-American Rejects - Move Along (2005) Eamon - F**k It (I Don't Want You Back) (2004) Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved (2004) Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway (2004) Billie The Vision and The Dancers - Summercat (2004) Noam Kaniel - Un Monde Sans Danger (Code Lyoko theme) (2003) Jack Johnson - Taylor (2003) Blink 182 - Feeling This (2003) 3 Doors Down - Here Without You (2003) Howie Day - Collide (2003) Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love? (2003) The All-American Rejects - Swing Swing (2002) Luna - Lovedust (2002) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dosed (2002) Avril Lavigne - Things I'll Never Say (2002) Atomic Kitten - It's OK (2002) Good Charlotte - Hold On (2002) Simple Plan - Perfect (2002) Creed - One Last Breath (2001) 3 Doors Down - Be Like That (2001) The Calling - Wherever You Will Go (2001) Five For Fighting - Superman (It's Not Easy) (2000) NSync - This I Promise You (2000) Savage Garden - Crash and Burn (2000) Gigi D'Agostino - L'Amour Toujours (1999) Boyzone - All That I Need (1998) Remy Zero - Fair (1998) Lighthouse Family - High (1997) Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (1997)
Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting (1989) *Marx would write This I Promise You (2000) for NSync. U2 - With Or Without You (1987) The Police - So Lonely (1978) Bob Marley - No Woman, No Cry (1974) The Beatles - Let It Be (1970) The Beatles - Oh Darling (1969) Jimi Hendrix - Bold As Love (1967) Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (1963) The Teddy Bears - To Know Him Is To Love Him (1958)
BTW, Beyonce's Irreplaceable has the very similar progression (1-5-2-4). Funny that there's such resemblance between two biggest hits of the first and latter half of 2007.
If you know more, please post comments.

I saw a saviour A saviour come my way I thought I'd see it At the cold light of day But now I realise that I'm Only for me
If only I could see You turn myself to me And recognise the poison in my heart There is no other place No one else I face Remedy, we'll agree, is how I feel
Here in my reflecting What more can I say? For I am guilty For the voice that I obey Too scared to sacrifice a choice Chosen for me
If only I could see You turn myself to me Recognise the poison in my heart There is no other place No one else I face The remedy, to agree, is how I feel

Is Big Brother watching YouTube?
Of course. Beware the savage jaw. See you in Oceania in 20XX. ----- The birds sang, the proles sang, the Party did not sing. All round the world, in London and New York, in Africa and Brazil and in the mysterious, forbidden lands beyond the frontiers, in the streets of Paris and Berlin, in the villages of the endless Russian plain, in the bazaars of China and Japan - everywhere stood the same solid unconquerable figure, made monstrous by work and childbearing, toiling from birth to death and still singing. Out of those mighty loins a race of conscious beings must one day come. You were the dead; theirs was the future. But you could share in that future if you kept alive the mind as they kept alive the body, and passed on the secret doctrine that two plus two make four. 'We are the dead,' he said. 'We are the dead,' echoed Julia dutifully. ----- Inspired by 'The Seventh Seal' by Scott Engel and 'Batdance' by Prince. Contains elements from the 'Diamond Dogs' album by David Bowie.

FRED ASTAIRE in SMOOTH CRIMINAL
Starring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron
Choreo
FRED ASTAIRE in SMOOTH CRIMINAL Starring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron Choreographed by Michael Kidd 'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson Video edited by CFJ
I love both Astaire and Michael Jackson. I want young people to know Astaire stuff, that is why I made this. The video features scenes from the Girl Hunt ballet in The Band Wagon (1953) starring Astaire and Cyd Charisse (those supreme legs!! The most perfect body a woman could have. So sensual, so elegant), to which MJ gave homage in his Smooth Criminal vid (also in a performance of Get Happy on the Jacksons show in the 70s as well as You Rock My World in 2001), and, as an intro, a sequence from Daddy Long Legs (1955) featuring Leslie Caron (in motion pictures, you mustn't put a coin into a jukebox in an ordinary way!).
My initial idea was using also Yolanda And The Thief (1945) where Astaire appeared with the same costume, a white suit, hat and a blue shirt, but I eventually omitted it.
Michael Kidd worked with Janet in the Alright vid in 1990, featuring Cyd Charisse (in the red dress!), the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway.
If you want to see Astaire at the top of his game, watch his 30s and early 40s films (Ginger Rogers was not the best DANCE partner for him though. She was a great comedienne. The pair was more than just dance partners).

ORIGINS OF THE MOONWALK Dancers (in alphabetical order): Fred Astaire, Bill Bailey, Buck and Bubbles, Cab Calloway, Clark Brothers, Sammy Davis Jr., Daniel L. Haynes, Rubberneck Holmes, Patterson and Jackson, Eleanor Powell, Bill Robinson, Three Chefs (only the feet), Tip Tap and Toe (feat. Ray Winfield), Earl Snakehips Tucker Video edited by CFJ
My second Michael Jackson related video. Since the first one "Fred Astaire in Smooth Criminal" seems quite well-received, I decided to make another one. This time the theme is "who devised the moonwalk?".
As some people already know, a dance move called the moonwalk (a.k.a. backslide) had been existed before it became the "moonwalk". The video features the ancient moonwalkers and other greats who possibly influenced MJ's style of dancing.
The most well-known dancer as the "orignal moonwalker" should be Bill Bailey who performed it in the film Showtime At The Apollo (1955), which was also featured in the movie Tap (1989). But actually Bill Bailey, pupil of Bill Robinson, performed the very same step as early as 1943 in the movie Cabin In The Sky, which you can see here as well as the 1955 film.
The various scenes used in the video are from 1929 to 1955 (except Sammy Davis Jr. from '65 and '67). The oldest one is from Hallelujah, featuring Daniel L. Haynes as a minister pantomiming a train at a prayer meeting. I was totally amazed by his movement when I first saw that movie.
The most influential dancer on MJ's dancing is no doubt James Brown, but you can also trace the roots and origins of his style to those greats in the first half of the 20th century.
So, the question - "who devised the moonwalk?". My answer is "nobody". Or all the great imaginative dancers, including MJ, who made great efforts to move foward (should I say "backward" in this case?). I think the moonwalk is not a thing someone suddenly came up with one day. There must have been so many great unknown dancers other than the ones who were lucky to be recorded... In other words, Rome was not built in a day.
Amazed by the dancers in the video? But there were many other greats. You must see The Nicholas Brothers, The Berry Brothers, The Four Step Brothers, Pops & Louis...etc, etc. If you like this vid, you better check out The Nicholas Bros in Down Argentine Way (1940) on my channel. Then, watch Stormy Weather (1943). YOU HAVEN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET.

The Nicholas Bros perform the title song in Down Argentine Way.
It was the very beginning of their golden years in the early 1940s. To be accurate, it's from 1940 to 1943. During the period, they appeared in six films in Hollywood - Down Argentine Way (1940), Tin Pan Alley (1940), The Great American Broadcast (1941), Sun Valley Serenade (1941), Orchestra Wives (1942) and the legendary Stormy Weather (1943). And this is definitely one of their bests. It's actually equal with the famous 'Jumpin' Jive' routine in Stormy Weather.
By this time, the Bros, Fayard and Harold, had already been stars at Cotton Club in Harlem and also appeared in several films, such as Kid Millions (1934), The Big Broadcast Of 1936 (1935), Calling All Stars (1937), etc. They were already fabulous in the '30s. This film, however, tells that in those days the little brothers were, so to speak, only "Padawans". Now they were back on screen as "Jedi Knights"!
In the first place, Irving Cummings, director of D.A.W., intended to edit and shorten the Bros' scene, while dance director Nick Castle made a claim for including it in its entirety. A test screening was held, where the audience raised a cheer for the Bros and shouted to the operator in the projection booth to rewind the film and show their dance sequence again (the operator actually did it), which settled the argument. It eventually survived and now you can watch it here. The Nicholas Bros were known as "the Show Stoppers" in the '30s. Nobody could follow them on stage. And they stopped the show literally even on the silver screen!
Fayard and Harold appear again at the end of the movie and dance a bit. It also features Carmen Miranda singing 'Mama Yo Quiero' (as well as 'South American Way') which Harold would sing in Reckless Age (1944).
You can see the D.A.W. routine enacted on the Colgate Comedy Hour aired on Dec 14, 1952. The Bros performed it also in the film Botta E Risposta (1950) in medley with the 'Jumpin' Jive'.
Fayard Nicholas (10/20/1914 - 1/24/2006) is the man on the right. He was kind of a born dancer, a dance-crazy guy of the Astaire type. Watch every movement of his arms, hands and fingers when you see him dancing. Totally beautiful. You can compare it with the movement of Astaire's hands, for instance, in the 'Chanege Partners' number in Carefree (1938). Harold Nicholas (3/27/1921 - 7/3/2000) is on the left. He did singing, dancing, acting, impressions...a very versatile man of the Sammy Davis Jr type. Actually he was Davis' idol.
They were the kings. NO ONE could touch them.
Tap dancing is not an out-of-date thing, but still an exciting form of dance. One great thing about tap is that you can not only see it, but also HEAR it. Even a blind man could enjoy it. It creates beat, rhythm...which is the most fundamental thing for music. Yes, in the beginning THERE WAS RHYTHM.
Hoofers wear tap shoes, just like Jedis wear lightsabers...an elegant weapon of a more civilized time. I call hoofers "Jedis of dance".

Live at the "Save The Children" concert in Chicago, Sep 1972.
From a superb moving documentary film with the same title, featuring soul greats such as Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler, Jackson 5, Temptations, Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes...etc etc, and this is one of the best performances in it. Actually every act is the BEST, and besides this film is very beautifully edited and directed. The "Real Thing" dvd of Marvin and the "Get Ready" dvd of The Temps include some footage from it. Wattstax and Soul To Soul were released on dvd...so why not this???
