Adobe Flash Player 10 Features Multi-Bitrate Streaming, Improved Animation
PALO ALTO-Adobe's Flash Player 10 beta 2, released earlier this month, features multi-bitrate streaming and improved animation capabilities--among other developments made based on user feedback.

YouTube: A Double-Edged Sword for Political Candidates
PALO ALTO--Two years ago, former Virgina Sen. George Allen lost his bid for reelection after a YouTube video of him calling a Democratic volunteer "macaca" became an instant hit. Today, political "gotchya videos" are surfacing on YouTube every few days, and candidates have never had to be more careful about what they say.
But they've also never had such unfettered access to the voting public. They're able to communicate with voters on their own terms, without a media filter--a phenomenon that Steve Grove, head of news and politics at YouTube, said is changing the media ecosystem and bringing greater transparency to both campaigning and reporting.
Steve was a speaker at the Beet.TV online video executive conference held here at Stanford yesterday.

PALO ALTO -- "There are no TV journalists anymore," says Charles Tillinghast, president and publisher of msnbc.com in this interview with Beet.TV
msnbc.com is a joint venture of NBC Universal and Microsoft.
Nope, he didn't mean that there's any downsizing over at NBC News, he means that video news gathering is no longer television-centric but content is being created for the Web. A few days ago, we visited him at the NBC headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza for this overview of the transformation of video journalism.
Charlie will be the featured speaker at the Beet.TV online media roundtable taking place on the Stanford campus in a few hours.
Our session today is moderated by former CBS News President Andrew Heyward and myself. We have a great line up of folks from YouTube, CBS Interactive, The New York Times, Adobe, VideoEgg, TurrnHere, Vator.tv, CNET, HP and many others. We are not streaming live, but will provide numerous segment from the sessions and one-on-one interviews over the next few weeks.
Kelsey and I will also cover the AlwaysOn conference which begins later today.

Kara Speaks: I'm the "annoying girl who seems to know everbody...."
It was great to meet up in with Kara Swisher, co-executive editor of All Things D, the Dow Jones-owned website/conference business she heads up with Walt Mossberg. We chatted in Manhattan's Madison Park a few days ago.
Kara has been been on a whirlwind, covering digital news in Los Angeles, the Valley New York and Washington. She complements her text reporting with her handy little $200 Flip video camera.
She says her colleagues have their own approach to creating Web video. Her "shtick" is being "an annoying girl who seems to know everybody."
Recently, Kara broke the news of the sale of paidContent to the Guardian. She told me that paidContent founder Rafat Ali is "creating the new forms of journalism." Pasted below is her interview with Rafat.
Kara told me that traffic at All Things D is booming and plan are underway to expand the conference business to Europe.

Tiny Blip.tv Collaborates with Digitas for The Smart Show
Blip.tv, the scrappy New York start-up known as a video publishing platform for episodic Web video, is a partner to global digital ad agency Digitas in the creation of Holiday Inn Express' web series The Smart Show.
To get an overview on Blip.tv and the collaboration with Digtas, I spoke with Blip's Director of Advertising Sales Sam Stahl.
Blip. focuses on episodic content rather than personal videos, and has a largely open source platform. One thing that is cool about Blip is that it has very little branding around its player and allows publishers to create their own branded skins.

Kyte Powers Huffington Post, 50 Cent and other big brands....
Kyte has substantially transformed from being a video camera phone sharing site, to a full-blown online video delivery tool for big brands. It is much more akin these days to the Platform or BrightCove, than Flixwagon or Qik.
Uploads from mobile phones are a small part of the content on the Kyte platform. It's really more about big brands that want customized delivery including a customized video player, branded channels on social networks and other valuable utilities.
The Huffington Post is using Kyte to stream the NetRoots conference.
50 Cent uses the Kyte platform to stream an astounding number of clips daily: Nearly 200,000 video views per day on some 30,000 web sites, according Danial Graf of Kyte. Some 22 million videos have been viewed since the channel started in November.
Daniel told me that monetization for his company's services will come through ad ad model, unlike BrightCove or the Platform which are paid sofware solutions. We caught up with Daniel in Madison Park a few days ago.

Kyte Sails in a Different Direction Than Qik, Flixwagon
There's been a lot of speculation in the blogosphere lately about whether Kyte, Qik,or Flixwagon will finish first in the cell phone video streaming trifecta.
But according to Kyte CEO Daniel Graf, Kyte's broader focus means it's not really in the race with Qik and Flixwagon.
Kyte is focused on a different market, partnering with entertainment companies MTV Europe and KROQ and working with artists from the four major record labels (Universal, Sony, EMI and Warner). It also will support any type of video content, whether online, mobile, live or recorded, while Qik and Flixwagon are primarily concerned with the live cell phone streaming of individual users.
Kyte also lets users embed branded, automatically updating players on their websites and allows fans watching a channel on different sites to chat. So the thousands of fans watching 50 Cent's Kyte channel on Facebook, 50cent.com, and MySpace can form a cross-platform community.
Kyte's big-name deals, broader production focus and better distribution sure make it seem like they're beating Qik and Flixwagon. FastCompany TV founder Robert Scoble thought so; he named Kyte the winner in a much-discussed guest blog at TechCrunch.
Of course, Qik and Flixwagon are still alpha testing and Kyte's Mobile Producer is in private beta, so it's too early to declare the race over. All three sites will undoubtedly make exciting progress in the coming weeks.

Qik, pronounced "quick," is enabling a select group of video bloggers, some network news organizations and even Vatican officials to report and document developments with the camera on a smart phone.
No longer the province of a select group, Qik opens up today to the public. Also, users with both Symbian and Windows Mobile smart phones can use the system.
There are some interesting new social functions in which users can "narrowcast" to just a selected group.
To get an update on the development of Qik and where it might be going, I spoke with Bhaskar Roy. He filled me on on some of the uses including the use of Qik by Vatican officials to document the activities of the Pope.

Far beyond the limitations of the 30 second television spot, marketers now have the opportunity to connect with audiences through episodic, branded content. Of course, marketers must connect with consumers who have migrated in mass numbers from television to online.
Digitas is one of the largest world's largest interactive advertising agency. In May, the company announced the formation of a digital studio production unit called The Third Act to create branded episodic programming. For an insight into how marketers and their agencies are transforming in this new media landscape, Kelsey interviewed Christine Beardsell, creative director of The Third Act.
The Third Act is producing The Smart Show for client Holiday Inn Express.
