Reggae dancing hit Japan in the late 80s to early 90s. The scene has grown rapidly since 2000. In 2002, a Japanese reggae dancer known as Junko competed in the annual Dancehall Queen competition held in Montego Bay. She made history as the first non-Jamaican to win the contest and earn the title of "Dancehall Queen". The victory inspired a new generation of dancers from Japan, each with a unique background and style. Competitions are now held throughout the country with nearly 130 teams nationwide.
