I have done a bit of research ( http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment16/ 01.html#1 ) and see where the sixteenth amendment does grant the right of the government to tax incomes (considered to be a excise tax) and that being the basis of your w2, w4 and the filing of necessary paperwork. Where am I missing the point?
