HISTORY:
The theatre was founded in Washington, DC in 1980 by Howard Shalwitz, Roger M. Brady, who along with Linda Reinisch, had an idea for a new kind of theatre that would shake up the nation. The idea was simple--pull together a group of exceptionally talented actors, seek innovative scripts with something challenging to say and find fresh approaches to acting, directing, and design. At the time, most theatres outside of New York were producing only classics and recent New York hits. Woolly Mammoth was part of a wave of new theatres determined to change that - to forge the future of the art form rather than just preserving its past.

Today, under the leadership of Mr. Shalwitz as Artistic Director, Woolly pursues its long-range vision of becoming the epicenter for challenging new theatre in America in a new 265-seat theatre in the heart of downtown. The new space, designed by McInturff Architects, has won five major awards for interior design from The American Institute of Architects (AIA).
