Sexy, sultry Gilda (Rita Hayworth) is the new "canary" in casino owner Ballin Mundson (George Macready) life and the old one in his right hand man Johnny Farrel (Glenn Ford). Director King Vidor's 1946 film noir skyrocketed Hayworth's career into Hollywood legend. Born in New York City, Margarita Carmen Cansino, daughter of professional dancers, her father a Spanish flamenco dancer and her mother an English/Irish-American Ziegfield girl. Hayworth the began her dancing career at age 6, performing with her father's dance company. She made her Hollywood debut at the age of 16 after Fox Studios signed her to a contract. Working under the name of Rita Cansino, she had several bit parts. When this contract ended, her first husband, whom she married at the age of 19, got her into Columbia Pictures, where studio head Harry Cohn changed her name to Rita Hayworth (her mother's maiden name was Haworth) There she continued to get only minor parts and endured painful electrolysis to raise her hairline. Then in 1939 received notice for a supporting role in Howard Hawk's Only Angels Have Wings (1939), and other studios began to ask for her services. The most significant of these "loans" was for the title role in the Strawberry Blonde with James Cagney, which locked her into leading roles. Following Strawberry Blondes she was selected to star opposite Tyrone Power, in Blood and Sand and achieved top stardom with her sizzling performance as the amoral and seductive "Doña Sol des Muire". Shot in technicolor, the role was originally intended for Gene Tierney, but studio head Zanuck dropped her when she eloped with Oleg Cassini. Carole Landis turned down the role because she did not want to dye her blonde hair red. Hayworth was willing, and dyed her dark brown hair auburn, and history was made as she had become one of Hollywood's most beautiful redheads and second in popularity only to Betty Grable. Of her part in Gilda, the star said of herself, "Every man I have known has fallen in love with Gilda and wakened with me".
