Psychedelic Brazilian Rock - 1969

Os Mutantes (pronounced [uz muˈtɐ̃tʃis], Portuguese: The Mutants) are an influential Brazilian psychedelic rock band that were linked with the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s. It was formed by two brothers and a vocalist, but has gone through numerous personnel changes throughout its existence. After a hiatus from the late 1970s to the early 2000s, the band reunited for a tour in 2006.
History
Os Mutantes were formed in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1965 by brothers Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards and vocals) and Sérgio Dias Baptista (guitars and vocals) and lead singer Rita Lee, originally named Six Sided Rockers.[1] The Baptistas' father was a pianist and mother a poet,[2] and the two had previously had a band called The Wooden Faces. Their current name was settled upon immediately before a performance on a Brazilian television program.[3]
Through other TV performances, the band was able to meet Gilberto Gil, an influential musician in the Tropicália movement, who brought them into the movement's circle.[3] Os Mutantes released two albums heavily influenced by Tropicália, which blended psychedelic rock with other forms of art. They played with many artists of this period, including Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, prior to their arrest and subsequent exile. During the 1960s, Os Mutantes was threatened by the military government of Brazil of that time.[4] In 1971, bassist Arnolpho Lima Filho ("Liminha") and drummer Ronaldo Leme ("Dinho") officially joined the band. They released five albums together before Lee departed in 1972 to start a solo career.[4] Subsequently the band moved in a progressive rock direction with the album O A e o Z, recorded in 1973 but released only in 1992 due to disagreement with the record company. Arnaldo left the band in that year to pursue a solo career due to differences with other band members and problems with the abuse of LSD, followed by Dinho and, a year later, Liminha. Arnaldo subsequently was institutionalized and jumped from the building's window, causing a six-week coma.[2] Sérgio Dias, the only remaining original member, led the band until its dissolution in 1978. During this time, they released three more albums. Two unreleased albums were released many years later, the aforementioned O A e o Z and Tecnicolor recorded in 1970 and released in 2000. Tech Notes: I found several copies of this with bad sound problems. I took the one with the best sound and took a nasty hiss out of it. It's still far from perfect, but I didn't have much to work with. I put that sound track to the video with the best image. I then ran the black and white video through an obscure freeware Mac video editing program called Hyperengine-AV to get the color effects.

Jacqueline Taieb is one of the greatest French rock singers and composers. Some female vocalists of the 1960s, known as "Ye-Ye Girls," were often promoted more for their looks than their talent. Taieb's musical genius made her an exception to the rule. She is still writing fresh and innovative music.
Lyriques:
Editing Notes:
* Converted from flv to avi using ffmpegx on Apple Xserve G4 dual 1.33 GHz * Edited in iMovie * Replaced soundtrack with fresh one * Used Audacity to speed up tempo of new soundtrack by 1.1 seconds so it would match video * Eliminated wide black borders and centered video * Changed color from sickly dark green and white to lovely black and white * Adjusted contrast and brightness a lot, there are some glitches in contrast in the crowd scene, gotta stop using iMovie, overall the contrast is much better * Various other things, like titles, sharpening, and such...

An incredibly beautiful song sung by Asha Bhosle. In recent years there has been a resurgence of Asha's popularity in the West. Some people who know of her don't know about her sister Lata Mangeshkar. Lata is the most recorded singer in history, and Asha isn't far behind. Though exact numbers aren't known, the amount of songs which each of them have recorded are in the tens of thousands.
Perhaps one of the reasons for Asha's recent popularity is because she has done more music which has a contemporary feel, while Lata's music is thought of as the kind that one's parents or grandparents listened to. This is unfair to Lata, for her music is timeless. Neither sister is better than the other for they are each beyond compare. They have both risen to a level of artistry which belongs to the ages, rather than to a specific time.
I can't find any info on the actress Anjana Mumtaz, except that she is 5'3" (1.6 M) tall, and that "Mahua" was her first movie out of 116! Her latest role in "Tulsi" in 2008 was that of "Sexy Mom"! Way to go Anjana! :)
IMDB.com lists this as her first movie out of

Editing Notes:
* Watched movie on Internet on my Apple iBook G3 600 MHz. * Found hidden .flv movie file on my hard drive. * Transfered file to my Apple Xserve G4 Dual 1.33 GHz. * Converted .flv file to .avi using the program ffmpegx. * Imported .avi info iMovie '05 using Flip4Mac Quicktime plugin. * Original movie image stretched out, aspect ratio was wrong. Fixed it using CFX Aspect Ratio plugin. * Subtitles hard to read. Split movie file into clips to insert new subtitles over the old ones. * Inserted new subtitles using CFX Simple Caption plugin. It's not perfect, but it's better than it was. * Soundtrack music quality was terrible, deleted it. Found good mp3 on Internet. * Music still too tinny. Equalized it in GarageBand to bring up bass and low end vocal ranges. Bass still a bit too low. I don't have the right tools yet to enhance it properly. * Inserted music into video. * Timing of music didn't match video. Put many micro edits into movie to extend it's length to make it match music. * Joined the separate clips together using SebSoft Join Clips plugin. * Split the movie into separate clips again, this time to edit each scene for contrast and brightness. Original movie was faded and dark. * Fixed contrast and brightness. * Sharpened. * Made beginning and end title sequences and inserted them. * Exported movie from iMovie in DivX format using DivX Pro.
I've decided that from now on I'll make all of my videos with Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack.

I extracted this gem from a lame dog of a movie, "Till the Clouds Roll By." A mangy mutt of a film which nobody claimed ownership of, so it remains homeless, in the public domain. It's not a terrible movie, it's just a pathetic little cur which never found its way.
Like "Over the Rainbow," this song is an ideal number for the mistress of melancholic hopefulness. "Look for the Silver Lining" is sadly ironic because of the realities of Judy's life. The pile of dishes can be a metaphor for her hardships as an actress, and her downtrodden appearance is as a reflection of her true status in the Hollywood system. Yet still she shines through. She is the silver lining.
---Technical Notes:
This video was a real bugger to produce. It took 4 days of experimentation with various kinds of buggy software. The final product is a combination of results from FFMpegX, mpeg2enc, DivX Pro, Hyperengine AV, Audacity, AUGraphicEQ, AUMatrixReverb, and iMovie 3.
I recently received a broken 800 MHz iMac as payment for fixing an iBook. I repaired the iMac and wanted to edit a video on it to see how it would do.
The original audio had been downconverted and upconverted at some point in its public domain life. There are defects in it which just flat out cannot be repaired. I did my best with it. I equalized it with the 31 band AUGraphicEQ. I could have mostly removed the slight digitized vibrato effect with the EQ, but it would have taken the sparkle out of Judy's voice.
I added just a tiny touch of hall reverb to punch it up and make it more full sounding. I don't like messing with audio history, but this had already been messed with quite a lot. It does sound better now than it did when I got it.
Conclusions:
An 800 MHz iMac is fine for editing videos for YouTube. Use the more stable iMovie 4 or 5. You can use 3 in a pinch. If you can afford it, go for a faster machine (at least 1.25 GHz). If you don't have much money, then 800 MHz is fine. If you're a geek, like me, you can get into complex file conversions and such, but it's a real pain on a slower processor. If you don't want to geek around, and just want to feed video from a camcorder into iMovie and do some simple editing, then an iMac G4 800 MHz "Flat Panel" is great.
The main problems I'd had were with programs which were made for Linux, but ported to Mac. Even though I'd had problems with iMovie 3, I've come away with a better appreciation of its high quality user interface, effects, and filters. Too bad Apple has stripped away most of its features in their latest version so they could make a buck by selling them to you. :p

Cakewalk music was the Hip Hop of the late 1890s and early 1900s. It was one of the first music forms that had been invented by African Americans which was popular with both blacks and whites.
The cakewalk style was probably started as a mocking imitation by slaves of white slave owners. It evolved into white performers wearing blackface to imitate and often deride blacks. In New Orleans, one of the best known marching "krewes" of Mardi Gras are the Zulus. The Zulus are blacks who started wearing exaggerated blackface in the early 1900s as a way of mocking white people in blackface...who were mocking black people who were originally mocking white slave owners.
While many white performers in blackface did their best to rip off and exploit black culture for their own gain, it is also true that many whites back then were fascinated by black music and dance. The two excellent main dancers in this movie just seem to be enjoying the hell out of themselves. They don't seem to be intentionally trying to make anyone look bad (like so many blackface wearing performers did). Not to excuse them or anything, but sometimes things aren't always just black and white.
The song was 3 minutes long and the film is much longer. I had to edit the music to extend its length. I think the song Satan's Cakewalk fits this film perfectly. *** Georges Melies is widely regarded as the person who invented special effects in motion pictures. He used his skills as a magician to forever change the way movies were made.

Moon and Sun get it on. Astronomers like to watch. (original score, mostly)
The original title of this film was "L'Eclipse du Soleil en Pleine Lune" ("Eclipse of the Sun and Full Moon") by Georges Melies. Melies is widely regarded as the person who invented special effects in motion pictures. He used his skills as a magician to forever change the way movies were made.
This film made its debut 100 years ago in 1907, following Melies' successful "A Trip to the Moon" by five years. Melies himself plays the aged astronomer who "gets no respect" from his rascally students. When the clock strikes, signaling the beginning of the eclipse, the students are genuinely interested. This can be ascribed to their youthful raging hormones and the fact that all astronomers, by default, are voyeuristic perverts.
The soundtrack is mostly my rendition of Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens.

Historic movie taken from rocket as it goes from the ground into space. Original soundtrac
Historic movie taken from rocket as it goes from the ground into space. Original soundtrack.
On Oct. 24, 1946, a Nazi designed V-2 rocket launched from White Sands Missile Range, in New Mexico, USA. Its 35mm movie camera recorded its ascent by snapping a new frame every second and a half. The rocket reached an altitude of 64.94 miles (103.67 kilometers). Then, as planned, it fell back to Earth at 500 feet per second and slammed into the ground. The metal cassette which held the film remained intact.
The launch was made possible because the US military and intelligence services had smuggled hundreds of Nazi scientists into the country in an project codenamed "Operation Paperclip." At the time, the Russians were also grabbing up as many Nazi scientists as they could. It was the beginning of the space race. Some of the German scientist gained recognition and honors in America until their pasts were discovered. See Operation Paperclip at Wikipedia.
I believe that the camera on the V-2 was pointing NE, and that the main mountain range you see in the video is the Tularosa Mountains.

I was in a clearing and saw a young white-tailed deer coming towards me. I only had time to squat down and aim my camcorder.
That day I had the flu and had been stuck inside my house all day. I heard a frog croaking in my front yard and figured that catching it on video would be a low energy thing to do outside for a few minutes.
As I was sneaking up on the frog I saw the deer coming through the trees and heading my way. I quickly crouched into a position which I soon found to be very uncomfortable. My hands were shaky because I was sick. Thank God for Electronic Image Stabilization!
When editing this I had to bring the brightness up. It was actually getting fairly dark outside when this happened. The deer come out and the frogs start to croak around sunset (here in N. Idaho).

O
Gothic psychedelic comic horror experiment. A rapid-fire stream of images and sounds.
Originally edited in one 26 hour session. Made in 1992 using an ancient black and white video camera. It was the kind where the VHS tape was in a separate unit from the camera itself, and it was even an early one of those. I did have access to professional editing equipment. I went into the little dark editing room, and came out more than a day later.
The video quality had deteriorated because of the corrupted "sync track" I'd laid down from the B/W camera. I've just spent another 22 hour session repairing the video. I was able to get it back to 98 percent of its original state. Much thanks to cf/x at imovieplugins dot com. They're the garage videographer's best friend.
The soundtrack is mostly my voice and other sounds run through a "toy" Yamaha VSS-30 sampling keyboard. I love my VSS-30, and still have it.
The psychedelic patterns are video feedback from pointing the camera at the monitor screen. That old camera had the best video feedback I've ever seen.
I would like to thank the Academy, and I would also like to thank NoDoz, without which this video would not have been possible.
