Joo-Young Oh earned recognition as a young virtuoso violinist when he won the 1996 Young concert Artists International competition in New York at age fourteen. he began playing the violin at the age of five and in 1994 moved to the United States to continue his studies.
His debut appearance in the U. S. was a performance with the Orchestra of the Interlochen Arts Camp after winning the competition in 1992. later the same year, he was invited to perform twice with the San Jose Symphony in california. he was then only at the very tender age of Eleven.
Mr. Oh has performed extensively including recitals in major U.S. cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Orlando, new york and world renowned cities such as, Berlin, sydney, tokyo, Osaka, Vienna, Lyon, & Vancouver. Noteworthy are his orchestral performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under maestro Salonen, the Tacoma Symphony, PA the Altoona Symphony, PA, the Hungrarian soloist Chamber Orchestra, the Ukraine national symphony Orchestra, the Sazburger kammer Philharmonie in austria, the massapequa Philharmonic & north Shore Symphony in Mew York, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, the Los Angeles Theater Orchestra, and the KBS Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic, and Pusan Philharmonic in south Korea.
Mr. Oh recently collaborated with world renown Soprano and Deutsche Gramophone artist, Sumi Jo, in a concert tour as guest soloist. he also made his 2003 new York Carnegie weill hall debut, which was followed by a Six-City performance tour in South Korea. His most recent activities in 2004 include, guest soloist at the Hardelot Summer Music Festival in France, and special guest at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in the Los Angeles World Youth Festival. He is winner of the 2004,2005, in Denver, Dallas, Washington D. C. and New York.
Mr. Oh has received the 'Outstanding Youth Award' from the Minister of culture and Arts as well as the 'Golden Medal Award' from the Institute of Music Federation in Korea. His discography include the 'Mendelssohn Violin Concerto' with the Slovakia Philharmonic of Europe & "Sacred Hymns' for Violin & Piano. Mr Oh is a student of the late dorothy Delay and currently studies with Stephen Clapp at the Juilliard School.
Violinist Oh Wins NFMC Young Artist Competition
A Korean violinist Oh Joo-young won the National Federation Music Club (NFMC) Young Artist Competition that took place on June 26-27 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Oh was the only contestant that made it to the finals from the strings division, and claimed the winner's title with a unanimous vote from the judges. Oh will receive $10,000 in award and 2 years of performance support.
There are three divisions in this competition: voice, piano, strings, and the competition is held every 2 years in a different city in the U.S.
Oh, who toured Seoul, Busan and five other Korean cities last June, is scheduled to perform with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra on June 21 and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia next year.
Oh was born in Jinju, Korea, and received much attention as the "morning star of the music world." He started playing the violin at age 5 under the tutelage of his father.
He made his debut in the U.S. when he was in 5th grade, performing at the Interlochen Arts Camp as the winner of the concerto competition in 1992.
He moved to the U.S. to continue his studies with the recommendation of Professor Hyo Kang of the Juilliard School, and is currently a student at the Juilliard School. At the age of fourteen, Mr. Oh became the youngest winner of the Young Concert Artists International Competition held in New York City only eighteen months after coming to the U.S.
