Operation Smile Founders Receive OK Lifetime Achievement award
More than 800 guests gathered on April 25, 2005 to pay tribute to Dr. William and Kathy Magee, co-founders of Operation Smile, as the 2005 recipients of the Operation Kids Lifetime Achievement Award.
Previous recipient Senator Orrin G. Hatch presented the award to the Magees recognizing their work in bringing life-changing surgical care to more than 900,000 children worldwide.
Founded in 1982, Operation Smile is a private, not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization providing re-constructive surgery and related health care to children and young adults living with correctable facial deformities, primarily cleft lip and cleft palate. In addition to contributing free medical treatment and aftercare, Operation Smile instructs local medical professionals and supplies necessary equipment.
"This relatively young award and gala quite possibly set the bar for the largest amount of money raised in a single evening in Salt Lake City." said Rick Larsen, producer of the gala and president of Operation Kids.
"It is a rewarding experience to recognize such deserving people and to know that because of the sponsors and donors who attended, the Magees will have the resources to perform nearly 4,000 more critical procedures."
Entertainment at the event included country artist Steve Holy, and concluded with a bang as music legend Gladys Knight took the stage and delivered a stunning performance.
Corporate sponsors of the event included: XanGo, America First Credit Union, Little Giant Ladder Systems, Close To My Heart, Newspaper Agency Corporation, Deseret Book, The Piano Gallery, KUTV, Rocky Mountain Printing, Red Capital, the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, The Cambridge Financial Center, Siegfried & Jensen, Senior Management Concepts, and The Grand America Hotel.

New Orleans Charter Science & Math High School -- A new outdoor activity area for physical education and classroom activities was rebuilt. Completion: September 2007.
About the Organization: The New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School (Sci High), an open admissions public charter high school, offers a rigorous, lab-based education in science, math, and technology that prepares students to major in those programs at the college level.
Sci High has a student enrollment of nearly 400 students who come from all parts of New Orleans. Its student population is 86% African-American and 57% female.
Project Description and Status:
The school's outside sports and recreation area was completely insufficient to meet the needs of a quality P.E. program. With funding from Operation Kids, drainage was improved, the courtyard repaved and relined, and new athletic equipment installed. In addition, a much-needed outdoor lab area for science classes was restored.

This partnership has been able to construct a safe, state-of-the-art neighborhood playground at Lyons Park in New Orleans... a place where these types of facilities are much needed.
This is the first of several planned "Little Hands" playgrounds in New Orleans - the partners have a goal of at least 5 new playgrounds over 3 years - based on support from individual and corporate donors.
Operation Kids and the AllState Foundation are committed to results-oriented recovery projects.

Operation Kids is now an official collaborator with The Allstate Foundation and the Injury Free Coalition for Kids.
"The Allstate Foundation has made a generous commitment to donate to the 'Rebuilding in New Orleans' campaign, a campaign that is dedicated to making a measurable difference," said Rick Larsen, president of Operation Kids. "The philosophies of The Allstate Foundation, Operation Kids and Brees Dream Foundation reflect similar ideals, so the relationship seemed like a perfect fit."

"A majority of this donation will go toward establishing a one-of-a-kind facility for Lusher Charter School in uptown New Orleans," Larsen said. "This multi-use, fully functioning and lighted football/baseball/soccer/softball field will be one of the finest facilities in the city."
This facility will not only serve Lusher's own struggling athletic programs, but it will serve as a practice field for Tulane University, a physical education and recess field for the New Orleans Charter Science & Math High School and a competitive venue for other neighboring schools and community sports programs. Construction will commence in the spring of 2008.
"Many of these children have gone without for so long," Larsen said. "This versatile facility will not only have a have a positive impact on the youth of New Orleans, but the community as a whole."

There's nothing as satisfying as seeing a project accomplished on-time and within budget, except for meeting the children who benefit directly from that project!
Members of the Operation Kids team got to do just when they attended the ribbon-cutting at the newly renovated Royal Castle Child Development Center in New Orleans.
This important childcare facility was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina, and needed new siding, windows, doors, interior work and structural repairs.
With a $75,000 lead gift from Operation Kids, those repairs have been made and the center is fully open for business. The official ribbon-cutting took place on Monday, December 17, as many of the center's children, along with their parents and center caregivers, joined Saints quarterback (and Operation Kids partner) Drew Brees and his wife, Brittany, for the event.
Drew & Brittany also toured the center. Up to 100 children, from newborns to 6-year-olds, are enrolled at the Royal Castle center. They are so precious. And it is so important that they get the best care possible.
