I agree with you but you must understand that US was a country forged by people's will and intentions, and little more than that. You guys basically started from scratch over there, only with the dreams of the imigrants. Over here in Europe things are diferent; we have nations that were created by events, environmental conditions, political and religious wars, plagues and famines among other things. All of this through our colective history established traditions, cultures and ways of life that are very old and are deeply rooted in the public conscience and society; thus making it a very hard thing to do overnight. I agree with you, church and state should be split at all times, but doing so will take time.
I know what I'm speaking. I live in Portugal, that even today is one of the most Catholic and conservative countries in the EU. Not only politically but also socially. Atheists here are still viewed like some strange aliens and heathens.

The US is much better leveraged than than Europe is. That is all I am stating. No it is not perfect in the US. But we have had several landmark decision that have blunted religion from being part of government functions, like that idiot judge and the 10 commandments in his courtroom.

Example: Muslims getting special treatment when swimming in a public Pool. That would be unconstitutional. That public pool is would loose any public funding.

Example: Non-Muslim students at Islamic school forced to wear head scarves That would be unconstitutional.
