Posted by John Barnes (7772399). This video of a 1933 Humber 12 sedan (driven by John Barnes ), was taken in Canberra in April, 1989. (The Robert Garran Offices on National Circuit can be seen in the background in one of the scenes ).
There are believed to be only four 1933 Humber 12 sedans left in the world. (Only 700 were built in 1933 due to the worldwide depression ).
By 1933, Humber Inc. had become part of the Rootes Group, which manufactured Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, and Commer vehicles.
The Humber chassis, engine, and 4 speed manual gearbox, were built in the UK at Coventry, but the body, (including the front and rear bumpers) was built in Australia by Ruskin, a coach-building company based in Melbourne. The Ruskin Body Works was sold to the British Austin Motor Company in 1949, to build bodies for imported Austin commercial vehicles.
The 4 cylinder engine was 1669cc, and developed 42 brake horsepower. It's "rated" horsepower was 12 - hence Humber 12.
The car was used by the Mayor of Launceston, Mr.Allen Hollingsworth, in 1933 / 1934 , as his official vehicle. It was shipped to Canberra from a garage in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1988.
The vehicle is fully original, except for the addition of indicators (blinkers ). The headlights and side lights were made my Lucas.
The white building seen at the end of the video, is the old Parliament House in Canberra (Australia ).
A photo of the dashboard can be seen on John Barnes Blogsite.
The vehicle was offered to the National Museum of Australia, as part of Australia's history, but they wanted it to be donated free! (Collecting for the National Museum of Australia officially began in 1980). The offer was withdrawn, and the car was sold to a Humber collector in the Northern Territory for $20,000.
The fate of the car now (in 2008) is unknown.
The background music heard here is "palm court" type music from the 1890's and early 1900's.

Recorded and posted by John Barnes(7772399). Ident theme for Radio Japan (NHK) heard on the shortwave band prior to commencement of an international broadcast. (Received in Canberra, Australia, using a standard telescopic aerial )on 11830 Kilohertz.
Signal strength is reasonable, but not strong. There is some noise and interference, but fading is only slight.
The ident theme is a musical 'chimes' version of the Japanese classic song "Kojo No Tsuki" 荒城の月 (The moon over a ruined castle) OR (Castle ruins in the moonlight).
Note - The Japanese characters may simply appear as squares or 'boxes' to some viewers.
The 'chimes' ident tune commences at 4 minutes before the hour, and runs for a full 4 minutes (only 2 minutes 15 seconds on this video clip) followed by 3 time pips and the commencement of the programme.
The introduction following the ident music (and time pips) is in Japanese, beginning with "Komban wa" (good evening), and includes a brief summary of the news. "NHK no kokusai hoso desu" means that this is an international (shortwave) broadcast from NHK (Radio Japan).
NHK stands for "Nippon Hoso Kyokai" (Japan Broadcasting Corporation).日本放送協会. 日本 = Nihon or Nippon (Japan). (Nippon Seifu = Japanese Government).
Note - Look for the "NHK JAPAN" sign that appears on the screen near the end of the video clip !
Footnote: The signal was received on a "Barnes" receiver, an old 1980's radio/cassette player made in Korea. The cassette player is broken, but the radio section still works. The HF(high frequency) shortwave tuner covers the range of 6 to 18 Megahertz.
Not exactly hi-tech, but it DOES prove that even in 2007, you don't need the Internet or expensive satellite equipment to listen to broadcasts from Japan ! (That also applies to China and many other countries around the globe).

Video clip on YouTube of Australian singer Lucky Starr performing his 1962 hit "I've Been
Video clip on YouTube of Australian singer Lucky Starr performing his 1962 hit "I've Been Everywhere" (in Sydney ) approximately 40 years after he made the original recording, which was copied by many other entertainers around the world. (The song was written by Australian singer /songwriter Geoff Mack in 1959, and a 'prototype' version was recorded, but never mass produced ).
Lucky Starr was born Leslie Morrison, in 1940, and was 22 years old when he recorded this original hit in 1962, after listening to the 'prototype' version by Geoff Mack. The song was extremely popular in Australia in 1962, and put Lucky Starr 'on the map' (as it were ).

This extract from the 1992 short film "Where is Memory" shows 'The Sleepwaker' (Peter Loeffler), attempting to shoot Hitler as he gives a speech during a Nuremberg Rally at the Zeppelin Field arena.
[ In this clip, the term "Sleeprunner" would seem more appropriate ].
Unfortunately, he is unsuccessful, and merely awakens "The Sleepwaker" from his dream-like state. (Hitler isn't actually there).
Not everybody's 'cup of tea', but a rather innovative film nonetheless.
Today, the former Zeppelin Field is part of the Norisring motor racing circuit, where racing cars can be seen zooming past the remains of Hitler's grandstand ( Zeppelinhaupttribüne ) which is now used as a spectator stand. The long columns on each side of the main structure ( seen briefly in some footage from 1938 ), were demolished a number of years ago, for safety reasons.
The speech heard by "The Sleepwalker" was in fact one that Hitler delivered to German youth at a different venue (not at the Zepplin Field), at the 1934 Nuremberg Rally, and appeared in the film "Triumph of the Will".
The blowing up of the gigantic swastika on top of the Zeppelinhaupttribüne (as seen in the clip), was carried out by the American Army on the 22nd of April, 1945.

Lee Marvin, who won an Oscar for his dual role in this film, died of a heart attack in 1987.
The role of Catherine (Cat ) Ballou was played by Jane Fonda ( born,December 21, 1937 ).
The lyrics for the ballad are as follows -
Well now friends just lend an ear For you're now about to hear The ballad of Cat Ballou It's a song that's newly made And Professor Sam The Shade And the Sunrise Kid are singin' it for you
Cat Ballouuuuuuu, Cat Ballouuuuuuu, Cat Ballouuuuuuuuuuuuu.

She killed a man in Wolf City, Wyomin' Wolf City, Wyomin', killed a man it's true And that is why they're a-hangin' Hangin' Cat Ballou
She has the smile of an angel (Fights like the Devil) The eyes of an angel (Bites like the Devil) The face of an angel (I say she's the Devil) (She's mean and evil through and through) Cat Ballou, Cat Ballou, She's mean and evil through and through.

Opening credits and theme tune for the 1954 movie "The High and the Mighty", starring John
Opening credits and theme tune for the 1954 movie "The High and the Mighty", starring John Wayne,Robert Stack, Claire Trevor, William Campbell, Robert Newton, and a host of other well known stars from the 1950's.
The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, and ended up with an Oscar for Best Score, by the renowned composer and conductor Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979).
In short, the movie is about a series of dramas that occur on a Douglas DC-4 during a routine flight from Honolulu to San Francisco in the early 1950's. Not all the action occurs onboard the plane, as there are a number of 'flashbacks' throughout the movie.
The film was produced in the extra widescreen format of "CinemaScope", and was based on the novel of the same name by Ernest K. Gann.
The stewardess is played by Doe Avedon (born Dorcas Nowell), a model and part-time actress.
At the end of the clip we see Waikiki Beach (Honolulu) as it appeared in 1954, with it's lack of high rise buildings that disfigure the landscape today !

Opening segment for the 1950's TV series "Medic", starring Richard Boone(1917-1981) in his most likeable (and informative) role as Dr.Konrad Styner.
"Guardian of birth, healer of the sick, comforter of the aged....... and the qualities of a worthy physician are three - the eye of an eagle, the heart of a lion, the hand of a woman".
54 episodes of "Medic" were produced by NBC (National Broadcasting Company) between September 1954 and November 1956.
The series was created by James E Moser, and was very progressive for its time.
See the other video clip for the end credits (and theme music).
