This is an anti-war song and much folkier than the other stuff I have uploaded so far. The lyrics come from Mikhail Sholokhov's 'And Quiet Flows the Don' - the first part of his epic work about the Don Cossacks. The Cossacks were famous fighting folk but Sholokhov's novels and the folk song 'Beyond the Hills' is based on, tell of people who would much rather be at home than in a battlefield. Indeed, who can blame them?
I have tried to keep my video simple - the books I build my wall with are mostly novels written about war or by men and women who were openly opposed to it. There are also some history, and art books. I bury myself in there somewhere and hope the foundations are strong.
Check out this wonderful interpretation by bunkomen - http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q2S_xb--ok An original song by singer-songwriter Kevin Dardis.
A soldier went to a distant land Riding his horse o'er the plain His native village he left for aye He'll never come back again
In vain did his youthful solider's bride To the north-west gaze each morn and eve Waiting in hope that her soldier dear Would return from the land he'll ne'er leave
But beyond the hills were the snow lies deep And the ice-fields crack and the tempests blow Where angrily bow the pines and firs The Cossacks bones lie beneath the snow
He fought so his people would not be enslaved As his father's own father had done before As a boy of 19 left a pregnant wife And as a man he went to war
As the Cossack lay dying he pleadingly asked That above him a mound should be piled for a tomb And a hazeltree from his native land Be planted in brilliant flower to bloom

-- Chris
A response to his video.
The story:
I wanna tell you a story that didn't happen to me. But it will one day, if you listen to Propagandabuster's bullshit.
I've never been to Japan, but I was walking down the street there one evening, in Tokyo, and I saw a bar. I like bars, so I looked both ways, crossed the street, but oh~
There was a sign, No Foreigners Allowed. That's fine, I think. My fellow foreigners are assholes, so it's okay for me to be affected as well. It's for the betterment of society. It's fair, even though I've been a law abiding citizens my whole time here. Race must be important here in their culture, so I'll accept it because it's their culture.
I keep walking, and call a friend. He's a foreigner, an American, but he looks Asian. We meet up, and find a club. We like clubs, so we look both ways, cross the street, but oh~
There was another sign. Japanese and Asians only. My friend ditches me cause he wants to get drunk. I don't mind, 'cause race is important in other cultures, and we should respect that. That's what Propagandabuster says, and he knows things, like:
1. If other people who look like you do shitty things, you should be implicated too.
2. So long as it doesn't happen in the USA, while you're overseas it's okay to do anything.
3. Overt racism is just something to laugh away with a brush of one's arm and a sip of your mornin' coffee.
These thigns should be added to the constitution and made holy.
Or not.
