From Animal Defense Legal Fund -
The struggle to end cruelty to animals is not an easy one. But there is something easy you can do right now to make a difference in the lives of abused animals. It's as quick and simple as typing in your name.
Through the Animal Bill of Rights, we (ADLF) are working to show Congress a groundswell of support for legislation that protects animals and recognizes their rights. Ultimately, we hope the petition will be a bill. In the meantime, the thousands of signatures on this petition send a clear message to our legislators that Americans strongly support legal protection for animals. When animal-related legislation is proposed, Congress will remember the huge number of signatures on the Animal Bill of Rights. With that in mind, they will cast a vote for the animals.
A Petition to the United States Congress
I, the undersigned American citizen, believe that animals, like all sentient beings, are entitled to basic legal rights in our society. Deprived of legal protection, animals are defenseless against exploitation and abuse by humans. As no such rights now exist, I urge you to pass legislation in support of the following basic rights for animals:
THE RIGHT of animals to be free from exploitation, cruelty, neglect and abuse. THE RIGHT of laboratory animals not to be used in cruel or unnecessary experiments. THE RIGHT of farm animals to an environment that satisfies their basic physical and psychological needs. THE RIGHT of companion animals to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care. THE RIGHT of wildlife to a natural habitat, ecologically sufficient to a normal existence and self-sustaining species population. THE RIGHT of animals to have their interests represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the land.
============================================= Life as a phenomenon to be treasured, revered and respected. We, as vegans, do not see animals as either "The Enemy" to be subdued, or the Materials for Food, Fabric or Fun that were put on Earth for human use.

Newly Discovered Virus May be Killing Bees - Study http://www.planetark.com/avantgo/dailynewsstory.cfm?newsid=4 4189 The honey bee is disappearing in a crisis called Colony Collapse. That is the Law of Interdependence. Overshoot & collapse applies to all species. Human animals have arrived. http://www.pacificfreepress.com/content/view/1175/81/ Edited Excerpt: Earth Day Report by Captain Paul Watson
In Al Gore's film he does not mention once that the meat and dairy industry that produces the bacon, the steaks, the chicken wings and the milk is a larger contributor to greenhouse gas emissions than the automobile industry.

Bees have been lumped together in the millions, in a factory farm type environment not so unlike that of our chickens and other livestock animals. Many of these bees are transported across several states to perform pollinations in orchards and farms around the country. Today they are in contact with substances they shouldn't have to deal with - pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and pollen from genetically modified crops. Researchers are scrambling to find answers, and as the spring season is upon us, time is running out.
A number of agricultural crops are almost totally dependent on honey bee pollination (90-100%), including almonds, apples, avocados, blueberries, cranberries, cherries, kiwi fruit, macadamia nuts, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, onions, legume seeds, pumpkins, squash, and sunflowers. Other specialty crops also rely on honey bee pollination, but to a lesser degree. These crops include apricot, citrus (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, etc.), peaches, pears, nectarines, plums, grapes, brambleberries, strawberries, olives, melon (cantaloupe, watermelon, and honeydew), peanuts, cotton, soybeans, and sugarbeets. 4 Another study found that pollinators are essential for the production of some U.S.- grown crops, particularly macadamia nuts, squash, and pumpkins.5 no more almonds and apples no more borccoli or carrots or sunflower seeds or oil

Mars, Inc -- the creator of M&M's, Snickers and other sweets -- continues to fund deadly animal tests, despite the fact that more reliable human tests are available and that none of the tests are required by law.
Mars in the US has recently funded a deadly University of California experiment on rats to determine the effects of chocolate ingredients on blood vessels. Experimenters force-fed the rats by shoving plastic tubes down their throats and then cut open the rats' legs to expose arteries, which were clamped shut to block blood flow. After the experiment, the animals are killed. Mars' US division has also funded other cruel experiments. Mice were fed a confectionery ingredient and forced to swim in a pool of paint and water. The mice had to find a hidden platform to avoid drowning, and after the experiment they were killed and dissected. In yet another experiment supported by Mars, rats were fed cocoa and then anaesthetised with carbon dioxide. Their blood was collected by having needles jabbed directly into their hearts, which can lead to internal bleeding and other deadly complications.
Mars' US division is also lying to the public, claiming that Mars doesn't fund cruel animal tests for foods, even though it has been uncovered there is a history of such experiments -- including the current programme at the University of California.
Mars' top competitor in the US, Hershey's, has pledged that it will not fund or conduct experiments on animals. Please urge Mars to follow Hershey's lead and immediately end all support for animal tests!
Mars UK produces Bounty, Galaxy, Celebrations, M&M's, Mars, Snickers, Twix, Topic, Milky Way, Tracker, Revels, Starburst and Skittles as well as Tunes and Lockets.
