As much of the Fecal Matter tapes As i`ve seen anywhere. These were compiled according to the tape listed in With The Lights Out which more than likely is the one Courtney owns because only three people have a copy, Courtney, Dale Crover and Mike Ziegler; and by default Courtney`s is more than likely Kurt`s copy. It`s likely there`s a couple different versions floating around.
"Illiteracy Will Prevail is a demo tape by Fecal Matter, recorded in December 1985.[1] The tape features the first songs written and recorded by Kurt Cobain, who would become famous as the frontman of the seminal grunge band Nirvana. Cobain performs guitar and vocals on the tape, while Dale Crover of the Melvins plays bass guitar and drums. It has been a much sought-after rarity by Nirvana fans since its existence became known.
The song "Spank Thru" was the only one from the tape to be officially released; it featured on the 2005 Nirvana rarities album Sliver: The Best of the Box. It, along with "Anorexorcist" and "Downer" would later be performed by Nirvana.
The demo tape, often called the "Fecal Matter demo" in Nirvana trading circles, is arguably one of the most sought-after items in the Nirvana community. Many attempts have been made to find it since its existence was revealed in the 1993 book Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana. Only a few people are known to have had possession of the demo, including Courtney Love (who has said the tape is "not for sale") Dale Crover and Mike Ziegler. The reason it is sought-after is because it is the first recording of Cobain's songs and the only known recording of his first band. It is also significant because it convinced Krist Novoselic to form a band with Cobain, which in 1987 would become Nirvana.
During the late 1990s, Charles R. Cross, author of the Kurt Cobain biography Heavier Than Heaven, was allowed unrestricted access to Cobain's lyrics, journals, and drawings for research into Cobain's life. In the book, he revealed that the chorus of the song "Class of '86" is "We are all the same/Flies on a turd". This song, along with several other, was leaked onto the internet the same day Nirvana's Unplugged In New York DVD was released. Cross also revealed that "Bambi Slaughter" is about a boy who pawned his parent's wedding rings for money, and that the 'Buffy' from "Class of '86" refers to the six-year-old character on Family Affair, played by Anissa Jones."
