Representatives from the world-famous Gibson guitar company recently showed off their latest creation at a suburban Maryland music store outside Washington. Gibson's self-tuning guitar comes as sales for the videogame Guitar Hero are increasing.
The guitar is modeled after the successful Les Paul guitar, but is much lighter. The bottom of the guitar is carved out to accommodate a small computer that tunes the guitar.
Forbes Magazine says Gibson's new guitar may be an attempt to catch the attention of guitar consumers, and take the spotlight away from music-based video games, like the Guitar Hero series. With videogames, players can be rock stars without having any real musical talent. Gibson is making it easier for students to get their musical bearings.
Despite Forbes' view that Robot Guitar and Guitar Hero compete for the same consumers, their makers are joining forces. Guitar Hero maker Activision has announced plans to feature Gibson guitars in its videogames. In exchange Gibson will supply wireless guitar shaped controllers for the game.

The U.S. space agency spacecraft Messenger swooped within 199-kilometers of the planet Mercury, in preparation for a permanent orbit, beginning in 2011. Messenger, which is operated by remote control from Earth, will soon begin beaming data back which scientists hope will answer questions about the planet closest to the Sun.
The unmanned spacecraft was launched by NASA in August, 2004. Messenger, stands for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging.
Planetary scientists hope the $450 million mission will help them answer key questions about Mercury, a tiny planet with temperatures that swing between 315 degrees in the daytime to minus 180 degrees at night.
Astronomers say the planet is heavily cratered and has a large iron core.
"Mercury is really an oddball," said Louis Friedman who heads the Planetary Society. "It is a very dense solar system object. It's very small. It's in toward the Sun. It's only about the size of the Earth's moon, a little larger. And, as such, how did it form? And however it formed is going to tell us something about planet formation."
Friedman says the Milky Way is like a jigsaw puzzle; he says only when all the pieces are in place, and all the planets are explored, will astronomers understand how the galaxy was formed.
"Mercury is a very, very dense and very heavy object, and therefore getting a really good handle on that density and its mass and associated size will help us in trying to determine what happened at the time of planetary formation," he said. "How did it reach that size, how did it evolve and how did assume its final orbit?"
Messenger is about halfway through its journey to put it in permanent orbit around Mercury in 2011.
But, until then, there will be another flyby this October and again in September 2009.

Long Form Video
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Three U.S. Navy vessels took evasive actions after five Iranian boats buzzed the ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz Jan. 6, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Jan. 7.
Speaking to Pentagon reporters, Whitman called the Iranian provocation "a serious incident." The fast Iranian boats approached at "distances and speed that showed reckless, dangerous and potentially hostile intent," he said.
The incident lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, he said. The Navy ships were going into the Persian Gulf when the Iranian boats confronted them.
"Small, Iranian fast boats made some aggressive maneuvers against our vessels and indicated some hostile intent," Whitman said. "This required our vessels to issue warnings and conduct some evasive maneuvers. The U.S. Navy vessels were prepared to take appropriate actions, but there was no engagement of the vessels."
He said the speed of the Iranian boats and their distance from the U.S. Navy vessels demonstrated potentially hostile intent. Bridge-to-bridge radio communications between the Iranian vessels and the U.S. Navy ships reinforced this impression, he said.
The U.S. ships were operating in international waters within the Strait of Hormuz and followed all appropriate protocols, Whitman said. The U.S. Navy ships are USS Port Royal (CG 73), USS Hopper (DDG 70) and USS Ingraham (FFG 61).
U.S. warships will take all the precautions needed to safely transit the open waters of the strait, the Pentagon spokesman said.
"This is reckless and dangerous behavior on the part of the Iranian vessels, and it should cease immediately," Whitman added.
Typically, small boats such as these are under command of Iranian Revolutionary Guards, U.S. Navy officials said.
All U.S. warships transiting the open seas are prepared to take action should their ship or crews be threatened, Whitman noted. The U.S. ships "did take appropriate action in terms of maneuvering and communicating, and were prepared to take further action if necessary," he said.
The Defense Department will work with White House and State Department officials to come up with the appropriate way to address the incident with the Iranian government, Whitman said.
Iranian boats took 15 British sailors engaged in United Nations-sanctioned operations in the northern Persian Gulf on March 23.
