A number of automotive analysts have claimed the latest small SUV from Mercedes is both ugly and non-competitive. It does suffer from a bit of ego with the huge three-pointed star on the front grill, but it is also very handsome when seen in the metal.

I would avoid a vehicle with a white leather interior, but overall, the fit and finish of this near-production ready SUV/Crossover is very good. When compared against other smaller SUV/SAV/Crossover vehicles, it's likely the Mercedes will hold its own.

This was one of the most interesting cars we drove last year. It's still worth a look. Now that BMW has come up with a sedan version of the new E92 M3, there can be a comparison dialog again.

The Audi is pretty complete at $66,000, and while the M3 can be purchased for about ten grand less, it's more likely you'll equip one to top out around $73,000.

Both cars are remarkably fast. The Audi is such a fine piece of kit, it's tough to fault it. But, even after only a short spin, it's clear the new M3 continues to deliver a driving experience unlike most coupes or sedans, notably any under $150,000.
