Abba visited Madrid from May 20-22 1974 to perform four songs on the tv show Senoras y Senores. These were Ring Ring, Honey Honey, Hasta Manana and Waterloo. This was the final stop of their promotional tour following their Eurovision victory with Waterloo at Brighton on April 6. This promotional tour was quite hectic and featured appearances and performances in London (Apr 10 & 30), Hamburg (Apr 11, 25 & May 13), Paris (Apr 17-19, May 18), Holland (Apr 24 & 29), Frankfurt (May 14), Saarbrucken (May 16), Brussels (May 17) and Madrid (May 20-22). The group were forced to cancel their intended summer tour of the Swedish Parks for their own sanity. Stig sent an apologetic letter to the directors of the 30 parks where they had planned to perform. The parks and press reacted angrily with headlines like "terribly immoral" and "Abba no longer need Sweden". The Copenhagen park director wrote "I have been ridiculed by a gang of Swedish amateurs who are certain to be forgotten a year from now. Every future letter from you will be returned unopened." Nevertheless Stig was able to point out "no contract had been signed with the parks, it was only a verbal agreement". The cancelled summer tour was put back to the next year to placate the parks and their Swedish fans. It was a good descision to cancel the Summer Parks tour, as the group were starting to feel the strain of promoting their Eurovision success by Madrid. This was their first visit to Spain. The four songs were staged with annoying special effects and accompanied by ballet dancers. They were broadcast in black and white, despite colour being available for some years. The group did not have the same view about the show as the chairman of Spanish tv Valerio Lazarov. When they started filming, Abba were asked to do a video style clip instead of simply doing a playback performance to their songs. They had words with Mr. Lazarov about this difference of opinion. The compromise produced this wierdest performance Abba have ever done! Abba were also supposed to record Waterloo in Spanish during this visit, as their Spanish record label Carnaby were keen to release a Spanish version of the song. However the scheduled interviews and filming for the tv show took longer than expected. There wasn't enough time left to record the song in the Madrid studios, so the recording session was cancelled. Björn promised they would never visit Spain again to perform in any show if Mr Lazarov was in charge of the national television. They did not return to Spain until 1979. Waterloo was already no.1 in Spain when Abba visited, and remained in the charts for 15 weeks. It reached no.1 in nine countries including the UK, and reached the top 5 in eight more countries. It was recorded at Metronome Studio, Stockholm on December 17 1973.

My, my, at Waterloo Napolean did surrender Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny In quite a similar way, The history book on the shelf, Is always repeating itself
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more, Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to, Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you, Wa-wa-wa-wa Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo
My, my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger Oh yeah, and now it seems My only chance is giving up the fight, And how could I ever refuse, I feel like I win when I lose
So how could I ever refuse, I feel like I win when I lose, Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to, Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you, Wa-wa-wa-wa Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo, Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you, Wa-wa-wa-wa Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

Abba visited Copenhagen on May 27 1975 to take part in the tv show Omkring Et Flygel. They sang SOS and So Long. At the end of the end of the show they hummed "Alley Cat". This song was a US No.1 for show host Bent Fabricius-Bjerre. It seems that every guest on the show hummed this tune at the end as a tradition. "Omkring Et Flygel" means 'Around a Piano', but is also the Danish title of the song 'Alley Cat'. During the afternoon there was a presentation of gold discs, and a photo session in the famous Tivoli Gardens. The girls wear their long cat dresses in this performance and do a very nice dance routine. SOS was Abba's first major hit in Great Britain since Waterloo 18 months earlier. It was catchy and well arranged, with Agnetha's pleading lead vocals capturing the imagination of listeners. The characteristic guitar and synthesiser rifts that run throughout the song were only added at the last minute, when Bjorn and Benny were staying back in the recording studio late one night. This song was Agnetha's first heartbreak classic, where her ability to cry with her voice (as Michael Tretow once said) made a perfect match with the uplifting melody and Benny's semi classical keyboard flourishes. SOS was recorded on August 22-23 1974 at Glenstudio, Stocksund. It was first released on the album "Abba" in April 1975 and then as a single in June 1975. It reached No.1 in six countries, and No.2 in five more. It peaked at No.6 in the UK, despite a belated September release. The song stayed in the German charts for more than seven months, having reached No.1 there. In USA, SOS reached No.10 and picked up the BMI Award as one of the most played songs on American radio in 1975. Bjorn recalls: "Everone else had decided already that this was the usual one hit wonder of Eurovision. We knew inside - and nobody else did - that we had come to stay. We knew the potential we had as recording artists, as well as songwriters."
Lyrics: Benny Andersson, Stig Anderson, Björn Ulvaeus Lead vocal: Agnetha
Where are those happy days, they seem so hard to find I try to reach for you, but you have closed your mind Whatever happened to our love, I wish I understood It used be so nice, it used be so good
So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me SOS The love you gave me, nothing else can save me SOS When you're gone, how can I even try to go on When you're gone, though I try how can I carry on
You seem so far away, though you are standing near You made me feel alive, but something died I fear I really tried to make it out, I wish I understood What happened to our love, it used be so good
So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me SOS The love you gave me, nothing else can save me SOS When you're gone, how can I even try to go on When you're gone, though I try how can I carry on
So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me SOS And the love you gave me, nothing else can save me SOS When you're gone, how can I even try to go on When you're gone, though I try how can I carry on When you're gone, how can I even try to go on When you're gone, though I try how can I carry on

April 5th is the 58th birthday of Agnetha Faltskog, the finest female singer there has eve
April 5th is the 58th birthday of Agnetha Faltskog, the finest female singer there has ever been. To celebrate, I have done this video to honour one of her many outstanding achievements during a lifetime producing wonderful songs. On January 24 1972 following a suggestion by Bjorn, Agnetha auditioned for the role of Mary Magdalene in the Swedish production of Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd-Webber's musical Jesus Christ Superstar in Gothenburg. The production team were very impressed with Agnetha's voice. At the end of the auditions producer Lars Schmidt announced "This is the singer we've been looking for!". Conductor Peter Kragerup declared "If we want to be ready in time, we need to rehearse 12 hours a day!". The show premier was on February 18 1972, at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg. The reviews were not particularly favourable. Expressen wrote "There is enthusiasm and good intentions, but no knowledge of theatrical techniques. Agnetha Faltskog, as Mary Magdalene, is a sweet young girl and she knows how to sing." Agnetha recalls "I thought it was tremendous to get a role, to act and sing at the same time." After about a dozen performances, the show company went on tour. Agnetha was unable to join them, as she was already committed to a Swedish Parks tour. She explained "Even if I'm no longer playing the role of Mary Magdalene, I'm going to sing the song in my new show. On stage I'll be accompanied by four musicians and four dancers." Agnetha recorded two songs from the musical at the Metronome Studios on February 4 1972 for release as a single. These were Vart Ska Min Karlek Fora (originally I Don't Know How To Love Him) and Nu Ska Du Bli Stilla (Everything's Alright). Both were produced by Bjorn. The song went straight into the Swedish charts at No.2 on March 26. Agnetha said "I had no doubt that the song would be a success but I didn't think that it would happen so quickly. It's a real surprise!". Agnetha also provided the vocals for a double album original Swedish cast recording of the musical in March 1972. The two pictures in this video are from the show premier. Agnetha sings this song on stage in the first picture. In the second picture, Bjorn congratulates Agnetha backstage after the show. Agnetha wipes a tear from her eyes, clearly this show debut was an emotional experience for her.
Vart Skall Min Kärlek Föra? From album: Tio Ar Med Agnetha Originally: I Don't Know How To Love Him Composers: Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice Swedish lyrics: Bengt Hallqvist
English translation of Swedish lyrics:
Where Will My Love Lead?
Where will my love lead? Say what can I really do? Can I ever reach his heart? When he looked at me everything changed, I am no longer myself.
I don't know what happened to me, I have never felt this way. He a man, among other men, I can have as many men as I want So what does he signify, this ordinary man?
Should I whisper softly? Should I cry out loud That I never felt Anything like this before? Have I learned to love now? Has it finally happened?
Isn't it rather crazy? He made my senses come alive I was as usual above it all So hard was I on every man Now suddenly I don't know, He frightens me.
Say, have I learned to love now? Has it finally happened?
But I would not allow it When he said he cared for me. I became afraid, horribly afraid, I ran away from him, oh! I could die of shame, He scares me so, I miss him so, I love him so.

Cheltenham is the centre of National Hunt Horse Racing in Britain. The National Hunt season starts in September and is geared towards horses qualifying for the 4 day Cheltenham Festival in March, where the Champions of the various events are decided. The blue riband race is the world famous Cheltenham Gold Cup, which decides the best jumping racehorse every year. The prize money for the race is around £500,000. The race is over 3 miles and 2.5 furlongs, with 22 fences to jump. The Festival attracts around 250,000 visitors over the 4 days. Many of these are Irish punters making their annual pilgrimage. They bring a very lively atmosphere to the town centre pubs in the evenings! Across the country, around £500 million is wagered on the 25 races. A famous recent Gold Cup winner is Best Mate, who won the event for 3 years in succession from 2002-4. Here is my son David standing next to the statue erected in honour of Best Mate at the racecourse. Huge sums of money are won and lost by punters every year. The biggest gambler is Irish racehorse owner and multi-millionaire J.P.McManus, who often bets £1 million. 2008 Result: 1st Denman 9/4, 2nd Kauto Star 10/11F (defending champion), 3rd Neptune Collonges 25/1. The first 3 were all trained by champion trainer Paul Nicholls, a great achievement! This picture and subject seemed most appropriate to go with this song from Agnetha's comeback album My Colouring Book (2004). The song A Fool Am I (Dimmelo Parlame) was originally recorded by Cilla Black in November 1966 and reached No.13 in the UK charts. Agnetha's comments on this song are: "There are two Cilla Black songs, this and the single (If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind). There are very special arrangements on her songs, a little like the Beatles since George Martin produced her. I got stuck on this one because it's so explosive and dramatic."
Music: F. Carraresi Lyrics: A. Testa, English lyrics: Peter Callander
This time your story had better be good, Or I may leave you like I know I should, You say you've missed me while you've been away, Where'd you go? and who with - that's what I'd like to know, You have the nerve to run off like you do, You don't deserve all the love I give you
Fool am I! What a poor little fool am I! Oh why can't I be strong enough, Long enough to say that we're through, Fool am I! Just a poor little fool am I But I can't get it understood, you're no good What can I do? I can't stop loving you Tell me you love me - take me and show me, Make me forgive you again
(Instrumental)
Fool am I! What a poor little fool am I! But I can't get it understood, you're no good What can I do? I can't stop loving you Oh, tell me - you love me Take me and show me, make me forgive you again
Fool am I! What a poor little fool am I! Oh why can't I be strong enough, Long enough to say that we're through, Fool am I! Just a poor little fool am I! But I can't get it understood, You're no good, what can I do?

With their touring days over by 1981, Abba decided to use tv specials to promote their new songs. In April 1981 they performed a mini concert for tv at Europa Film Studios Stockholm, called "Dick Cavett meets Abba". Bjorn recalls "We wanted to do something really special, a tv show with both an interview and a live performance. Someone suggested Dick Cavett, one of the world's most famous and skilful interviewers. He accepted and came to Sweden. We didn't talk much beforehand. I think we were much more nervous than he was, but his composure made us relax and open up. We never regretted that we chose Dick Cavett." Rehearsals for the songs took place on April 24-26. The interview with Dick Cavett was recorded before an audience on April 27 as the first part of the tv show. The presenter managed to involve the four Swedes in his many jokes. The group gave an unaccompanied version of Don't Fence Me In in both Swedish and English. Frida gave Dick Cavett a lesson in Swedish pronounciation with the number 777 (sjuhundrasjuttiosju). The mini concert was recorded on April 28-29. The group performed live and were joined by their usual backing musicians. The songs performed were Gimme Gimme Gimme, Super Trouper, Two For The Price Of One, Slipping Through My Fingers, Me And I, Knowing Me Knowing You, Summer Night City, Thank You For The Music and On And On And On. 20 hours of material was recorded. This was edited down to one hour for the tv special, with song mixing by Micke Tretow and Bjorn and Benny. The tv special was broadcast throughout Scandinavia in September and most of Europe afterwards. Summer Night City was recorded from May to July 1978 at the new Polar Music Studios in Stockholm. This song is a good example of a track which was difficult to complete. Assisted by Michael B. Tretow, Benny and Bjorn spent a week trying every mix possible. In an effort to make the song sound more forceful, they decided to cut the 45 second introduction. Bjorn later said "The song deserved a better treatment." The song was released as a single on September 6. It reached No.1 in Sweden on October 6, No.5 in Britain and the top 5 in most European countries. The song was inspired by the Bee Gees. New Musical Express wrote "Abba go disco - the song's by no means as memorable as earlier stuff." Bjorn retorted "Everyone's doing it - it's the pulse of the 70's!" This video is for Jade, daughter of my Aussie friend Di.

Summer night city, summer night city
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancin' in the dark Summer night city Walkin' in the moonlight, love-makin' in a park Summer night city
In the sun I feel like sleepin', I can't take it for too long My impatience slowly creepin', up my spine and growin' strong I know what's waiting there for me, Tonight I'm loose and fancy free ah --
When the night comes with the action, I just know it's time to go Can't resist the strange attraction from that giant dynamo, And tomorrow when it's dawning and the first birds start to sing In the pale light of the morning nothing's worth remembering, It's a dream, it's out of reach, scattered driftwood on a beach
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancin' in the dark Summer night city Walkin' in the moonlight, love-makin' in a park Summer night city
When the night comes with the action, I just know it's time to go Can't resist the strange attraction from that giant dynamo, Lots to take and lots to give, time to breathe and time to live
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancin' in the dark Summer night city Walkin' in the moonlight, love-makin' in a park Summer night city
It's elusive call it glitter, somehow something turns me on Some folks only see the litter, We don't miss 'em when they're gone, I love the feeling in the air, my kind of people everywhere ah --
When the night comes with the action, I just know it's time to go Can't resist the strange attraction from that giant dynamo, And tomorrow when it's dawning and the first birds start to sing In the pale light of the morning, nothing's worth remembering It's a dream, it's out of reach, scattered driftwood on a beach
Waiting for the sunrise, soul dancin' in the dark Summer night city Walkin' in the moonlight, love-makin' in a park Summer night city

Abba won the Eurovision Song Contest at Brighton, England on Saturday April 6 1974 with Waterloo by 24 votes. It was the first time Sweden had won, and also the first time a group had won. Stig recalls "Most of the songs in the contest were boompa-boompa. We decided to write something that was more of a pop song and which would change the Eurovision Song Contest situation." The visual effect was very glam rock, with platform boots and satin costumes covered in glitter and sequins, designed by Inger Svenneke. Bjorn had a unique star shaped guitar made especially for the occassion, which he plays here. Bjorn recalls "My costume was so tight that I couldn't sit down in it. It was terrible and I cursed myself for not slimming a bit before wearing that thing. And afterwards, of course, I went on the strictest diet you can imagine." The single Waterloo was released in UK on Friday April 5, the day before ESC. After their ESC victory, the single sold 15,000 copies within the first 2 hours in UK on Monday April 8. On April 10 Abba performed the song on Top Of The Pops. It then jumped up from 17 to 2 by the next week. The next day April 11 Abba flew to Hamburg and recorded this German performance for NDR/N3 tv. The song reached number 1 in England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Spain and South Afica. Waterloo was recorded in English, Swedish, German and French. A Spanish version was scheduled, but this was cancelled. The German version was recorded at Mackans Studio on March 15 and released on April 5.

Abba visited Tokyo from November 17-26 1978 to promote their growing success in Japan. They had 3 albums in their top 20 at that time: Arrival, Abba - The Album and Greatest Hits. This was their first visit to Japan since November 1972. They took part in several tv and radio shows and recorded "Abba Special". This was a one hour tv program in which they performed 13 songs, sometimes surrounded by dancers. The songs were Eagle, Take A Chance On Me, Money, Money, Money (live), SOS (live), That's Me, Tiger, Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Fernando, Summer Night City, Knowing Me, Knowing You, If It Wasn't For The Nights and Thank You For The Music (live). This performance of Dancing Queen was recorded on November 22 and broadcast on December 20 in the tv show "11PM". The Japanese subtitles are presumably translating the lyrics. Dancing Queen is Abba's best known song, and has filled dance floors all over the world ever since it was released. The inspiration for the song was George McCrae's 1974 disco classic Rock Your Baby. Frida recalls "I loved the song from the very beginning. Coming back from the studio, Benny played the backing track for me. It was so beautiful that I started to cry. I mean, even without lyrics or voices on it, it was outstanding." Recording commenced in August 1975 at Glenstudio, Stocksund with additional recording at Metronome Studio, Stockholm. The song was released in Britain on August 16 1976. It was an instant hit and reached No.1 on September 4, and stayed there for 6 consecutive weeks. It reached No.1 in Sweden eight days after release, and stayed there for 14 weeks. The record sales figures were massive worldwide, reaching No.1 in 13 countries. Stig recalls "One day, I found a note in my office with a phone number. I gave the piece of paper to Gorel and told her 'I don't know who it is, but can you call them anyway.' Gorel replied 'Its not a phone number, it's the latest sales figures for Dancing Queen in Britain.'"

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen
Friday night and the lights are low, Looking out for the place to go, Where they play the right music, getting in the swing You come to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy, night is young and the music's high With a bit of rock music, everything is fine You're in the mood for a dance, and when you get the chance
You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet only seventeen Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen
You're a teaser, you turn 'em on Leave 'em burning and then you're gone Looking out for another, anyone will do You're in the mood for a dance, and when you get the chance
You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet only seventeen Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen

Abba visited England from September 30 - October 2 1975 to appear in Seaside Special at Torbay in Devon. This was a popular summer show broadcast every Saturday evening in the mid 70's from different seaside resorts in the UK. The main stage was in a circus tent. The shows featured a variety of music and comedy acts. Guests on this edition were female impressionist Janet Brown, theme song singer Mike Batt and Lulu. Other guests were Des Lane, Kenneth McKellar and Dailey and Wayne. Abba were introduced by popular DJ Tony Blackburn and performed Waterloo to playback (recorded outside earlier) and their new single SOS live. The girls wear their very short cat dresses here and do a very nice dance routine. SOS was Abba's first major hit in Great Britain since Waterloo 18 months earlier.
