Let's say you're shooting two people talking. Shoot the whole conversation from an A and B angle. Now, when you're editing it, cut the shot from A to B, but keep the sound from A running while the shot is on B (sometimes called 'roll editing'). It's an important technique in achieving realistic conversation or interaction, and gives you control over what character or scene you wish to depict whilst dialogue continues.
