This is the trailer of the documentary film 7 years. In a period of 3 months I tried to create a picture of the gay and lesbian scene in Kenya. I followed different homosexuals and saw how they encounter problems living a normal life and being who they are. The project is being sponsored by the Dutch NGO Youth Incentives. More info about the project and a diary with my experiences during the shooting can be found on www.youthincentives.org. In the trailer I had to cover some faces of people I interviewed since they can get in trouble being seen openly gay in Kenya. In the full length film faces are not covered. The film has or will been shown during the following festivals: 1.Oslo Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (Norway). 27-06-2007. 2.International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). 14-11-2007 till 21-11-2007 3.Festival Gay et Lesbien de Belgique (Brussels, Belgium). 23-01-2008 4.London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (UK). 08-04-2008. 5.Torino GLBT Film Festival (Italy). 22-04-2008. 6.Cape Film Festivals Cape Town (South Africa). 24-04 & 26-04 7.Queer Up North Manchester (UK). 21-05-2008 8.Uppsala Pride Festival (Sweden). 23-05-2008 9.NewFest New York 05-06-08 till 15-06-08 10.Queer Lisboa / Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (Portugal) 19-09-08 till 26-09-08
The film can be ordered in North America (Canada, USA & Mexico) through the distributor Frameline (www.frameline.org).
Being who you want to be is not as obvious as it seems sometimes. Having fought the battle for individual rights on most grounds in the Western world, in many developing countries individual freedom still is something to achieve. In Kenya society is modernizing rapidly. Still; it's dealing with traditional values of religious, tribal and neo-colonial background. Homosexuality is a criminal offence punishable with 7 years imprisonment.
7 YEARS explores the background of this fact and shows how gays and lesbians manage to live in a hostile environment. Finding a job, treating family, going out and sex are daily issues homosexuals in Kenya are dealing with. From a pastor to a male sex worker, 7 YEARS gives a voice to a group of people who are normally used to keep quiet.

This is a short video statement about homosexuality in Morocco. I have made a documentary on homosexuality in Kenya called 7 years, and on a trip to Morocco I took my camera with the idea of making a film on the same topic but in Morocco. I heard and read stories of Marrakech being the gay capital of North Africa and Morocco in general being relatively easy going and open towards gay and lesbians. I've spend a couple of weeks contacting people: NGO workers, human rights activists, riad owners and of course gays and lesbians. By phone and email I heard the most interesting and shocking stories of people fighting for gay rights, battling AIDS in same sex communities and living a hidden life of being married with a family during the week and going wild in gay parties and orgies in the weekend. But sadly in the relatively short period I had preparing for filming I couldn't find enough people to tell their stories in front of my camera. So this is all I could do: a short video statement.

Hiphop is the voice of young people all over the world, not only in Europe and the US. This is the film New Voices, a project sponsored by the Dutch NGO Oxfam Novib. Filmmakers Bram Vergeer and Raymond Verhoef visited Kenya and Uganda and explored the role of hiphop for the (East) African youth. Many young people in Africa grow up in slums where the easiest way to make a living is crime. Hiphop offers an alternative for this life and provides a medium to express feelings and opinions. Problems like poverty, unemployment, corruption, AIDS and teenage pregnancy are daily issues in the life of young Africans and hiphop provides a platform to speak about these topics in public.
In New Voices many different Kenyan and Ugandan artists are given a voice. From Kenya's most famous rapper Nonini, who shows us around in his neighborhood California in Nairobi, to Sylvester & Abramz, two very talented and active Ugandan rappers with their base in Kampala, it becomes vlear that hiphop is a voice which cannot be ignored no more. Also starring Buddha Blaze, Sinpare, Jua Kali, Frank Orina, Baddman College, Boda Klan, Klear Kut and De PPI.
This film has a total duration of 20 minutes and is therefore divided in 2 parts. You are now watching part 2.

It can be said that Cool Para is the founder of what is now called Zenji Flava, the reaction of the Zanzibar music scene on the success of Bongo Flava on Tanzania mainland. Early nineties Cool Para started releasing tracks and performing on Zanzibar. He calls his style Taarap, a mixture of the old Zanzibar music Taarab and modern rap.
In this film he talks about his lyrics, the history of Zanzibar music and the political situation on the island. Check out a video (shot partly in Amsterdam yes), a live show and a visit to his distributor on the island.

The Uganda music scene is coming up fast. More and more talented artists from all kinds of music styles come up and make their way even outside of the country.
Visiting Zanzibar in summer 2006 for the shooting of the film Zenji Flava, about the Zanzibar music scene and hiphop on particular, I met the hiphop duo Sylvester & Abramz from Kampala, Uganda. Their performance on the Zanzibar International Film Festival blew my mind and especially the song Lemelako, their hitsingle, I'm still listening often. I went back to see the guys in Kampala during the filming of my second movie New Voices, about the meaning of hiphop music for youth in Kenya and Uganda.
Reggea artist Pato and fellow hiphop artist Lyrical G where also attending ZIFF 2006 and in this film they perform live and explain you about their inspirations and the Swahili language barrier.
This clip is a short fragment from the film Zenji Flava.

Bi Kidude is Zanzibars most famous musician. Her age is unknown but must be somewhere around 90, some even say she's over 100 years old. She's the godmother of Taarab, a music style which mixes arab and African sounds. Bi Kidude is still traveling the whole wide world to perform.
Visiting Zanzibar in summer 2006 for the shooting of the film Zenji Flava, about the Zanzibar music scene and hiphop on particular, I paid a visit to Bi Kidude at her house and asked her what she thinks of the new hiphop music. Zanzibar DJ Cool Para, who is neighbor and somehow family member too was my guide. The interview took about an hour and Bi Kidude smoked a full packet of cigarettes. She supposedly still drinks a lot too....
This film is a short fragment from Zenji Flava.
