I animated this by painting each element of the scenes in acrylic on canvas. I then scanned each canvas in sections and used photoshop to cut each element out onto seperate layers. I then animated the film using adobe after effects.

A Project I did at Uni for Bloomberg. This was originally a silent video on 3 separate, double sided screens in the reception of the HQ in London.
The screen was 8mx2m and was played 24/7 for three months along with my fellow students' work.
Mine and a couple of others were chosen to represent the project on bloomberg tv.
The brief was to make a film that would make the workers feel happy and stay in the building for day after day without realising why they are still there.
I chose to make a butternut squash wrestle a grapefruit. it's deep on so many levels.

This video is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to the amazing art videos that have been made as a response to this MAKE ART campaign.
Background:
YouTube.com doesn't have an ART CATEGORY.
They should have.
Scrap that.
WE should have.
So I started an open collaboration project. Whoever wanted to make a 1 minute video of themselves making art [featuring the slogan MAKE ART].
The response was truely overwhelming, with almost 300 video responses to date, and more being submitted daily. The project has taken over my life somewhat, but only because I let it, and it inadvertently resulted in me leaving my job to put the edit together. There were other reasons, but it was a contributory factor in getting the confidence to move forward with what I really wanted to do.
The edit has taken about a week, and I used iMovie. Premiere, I miss you.

So here's my MAKE ART video for the campaign to get YouTube to give us a video category and channel type for Art.
This is a continuation from the 'One Canvas' video i did a few weeks ago. Here it is if you missed it:

My plan for this campaign was to take every video and edit a big montage as a final piece, however due to the 230 video responses so far, and my major software issue (Leopard for mac.. don't go there just yet) I've been unable to grab videos from YouTube. Furthermore, most of the videos that have been emailed to me are in wmv format which imovie won't accept. Not to mention the fact that there is enough footage for a trilogy of feature films!
So I've had to re-think things a little. One option was for me to film the videos from the screen, however the amount of hours it will take and the crappy quality made me disregard this idea.
So what I thought I'd do is ask you to email me your clip again to cheekychen@gmail.com as .MOV files.
PLEASE TITLE YOUR FILE WITH 'MAKE ART' + YOUR USERNAME. Once I have enough, I'll put the edit together.
I will then post the video and invite everyone to make an edit of their favourite MAKE ART responses. These can be attached to my edit to keep them in one place, and this will mean that people can still make videos for the original request, as well as REMIXES of other people's MAKE ART videos*
*if you don't want others to use your video, then state this in the description of your video.
This way, there will hopefully be more chance of YouTube taking note, as there will be more videos out there!
