The original In-Laws just being themselves in director Frank Capra's 1938 Academy Award winning comedy adapted from a Kaufman and Hart play. An incredible cast of top-notch professional actors put this rowdy scene in typical Capra magic.

New stenographer Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur) and the boss' son Tony Kirby (James Stewart)
New stenographer Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur) and the boss' son Tony Kirby (James Stewart) are in love to the dismay of his snobby parents. Director Frank Capra's 1938 wonderful adaptation of Kaufman and Hart play won Oscars for best picture and best director and nominations for five more. Jean Arthur is joy to watch, one of Hollywood's greatest actresses and comediennes. This film was made at the height of her incredible career, which began in the drudgery of silent shorts and low budget westerns (her debut was a bit part at age twenty-three in John Ford's 1923 Cameo Kirby) , where she toiled for twelve years until she appeared in Ford's 1935 The Whole Town is Talking. Her acting skill and distinctive voice caught everyone's attention and her career really took off took the following year with her role opposite Gary Cooper in Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.

American tank crew led by Sgt. Joe Gunn (Humphrey Bogart) having been ordered to retreat, runs into a small contingent of British soldiers and offers them a ride. Director Zoltan Korda's 1943 well crafted war actioner still works more than sixty years after it was made. Strong characters and a tight, simple script, help drive home the important issues of the men who risked everything for almost no recognition because they believed in their cause.

Inmate Joe Collins (Burt Lancaster) returns from solitary in time to see his friend's body
Inmate Joe Collins (Burt Lancaster) returns from solitary in time to see his friend's body leaves the prison while sadistic head guard Captain Munsey (Hume Cronyn), responsible for the man's death, "asks" for more cooperation. Though tame by today's standards, Jules Dassin's 1947 film noir shocked critics and viewer and was considered Hollywood's most violent movie. It played to the prevalent cynicism permeating American society in the post World War 2 years. Dassin disowned the film, as he was terribly upset at the studio insisting on flashbacks of the men's lives outside of prison, each led to crime or betrayed by a woman. The film's strengths are Dassin's direction and performances by Lancaster, Cronyn and a collection of character actors wonderfully portraying inmates, including Jeff Corey, Whitt Bissell, and John Hoyt. Richard Brooks wrote the screenplay which bristles with a fine sharpness and poignancy. Director Dassin, a master of film noir during the forties, had apprenticed under Hitchcock and Kanin, and was riding a series of successful movies when he was named to the House of UnAmerican Activities as a Communist. He was blacklisted and eventually moved to France, where he struggled to find work (his French was limited as were his connections). Eventually he hit is with his gritty film Rififi (Due rififi chez les homes), considered the granddaddy of heist movies. He fame as a director soon eclipse anything he had done in the United States. When the "Communist Witchhunt" ended, Dassin returned to Hollywood and studio movies. He eventually married Greek Actress Melina Mercouri, with whom he not only made moves, but also became involved in her struggle to restore democracy in Greece during the fascist era of military dictatorship.

Rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) tries to tell newly arrived lawyer Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) there's only one kind of law in this part of the territory . . . a gun. Director John Ford's 1962 Western filled with his stock players like Andy Devine, Jeanette Nolan and John Qualen and typical ford broad characters as Stewart plays the naive, idealistic lawyer and Wayne the tough realist. Critics have split on the stature of this film. It was panned upon its release, and the leads, Wayne, Stewart and Miles were too old for the parts they were playing, yet today many consider the film one of the director's best and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence as a Western Classic.

Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) delivers tapes to his client only to have the client's assistant (Harrison Ford) insist on taking them, furthering his suspicions of pending murder of the subjects (Cindy Williams and Frederic Forrest). Writer/Director Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 brilliant movie goes beyond the thriller dealing with the disturbing issues of privacy and personal responsibility, making it unfortunately still topical for today, more than thirty years later. The Conversation was nominated for three Oscars, Picture, script and sound. Coppola beat himself that year, with The Godfather II, which won 6 Oscars. Also nominated that year was Chinatown. One of the greatest years for American movies.
