This 1977 film, directed by Roger Donaldson, was not only the first leading role for a young Sam Neill, but it was also the first feature film to be filmed entirely in New Zealand and shown in the U.S. But unfortunately, due to the release of "Star Wars"(don't get me wrong, I'm a big star wars fan), the film was quickly forgotten at the box office. Based on the Novel, "Smiths Dream".
As the cities of New Zealand are torn apart by civil anarchy and economic chaos, apolitical family man Smith (Neill) flees his shattered marriage and is thrown into the terrible world of revolution. Here, he is forced, even though he thinks only of peace, to be the anti-hero and discovers not all is how it seems. But when the time comes, will he be able to lay down his arms against the right-wingers of the New Zealand government? or will he stand tall beside the guerilla resistance fighters of his homeland?
btw: Sam and Ian said that during the filming of Smith and Bullen escaping, the explosion burnt thier costumes slightly, but they didn't complain to much because after having water dunked on you before every take, and spending weeks just trugding through the bush, tripping over cliffs, and falling into ponds all in front of a camera, a fleeting moment of warmth is more then welcome.
