CLICK ON "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY." Combines 2 audio tracks from Rudimentary Peni with scanned images from 2 out of print sources. The songs used are "Twitch" (Nick Blinko's incredible Lovecraft monologue) and "Imps of The Perverse." All images (except the lyrics) are from the 1979 October issue of Heavy Metal magazine (which was dedicated to HPL) and a book of Lovecraft's letters released in 1975 called "Lovecraft at Last" by Willis Conover (a young aspiring author who corresponded with HPL) which also contains several photographs. It gave me a chance to create a homage to one of my favorite authors, and my all time favorite punk band (still going after 30 years!). If you like this video and don't know Rudimentary Peni, you owe it to yourself to hear their recordings (see below). I AM PROVIDENCE
Unfortunately, despite the requests made on my original post of this video many months ago, I have decided not to enable embedding. The reason is simple. Embedding links to the "standard quality" version of this video, which looks like dog poop. This would not be a fitting tribute to Rudimentary Peni or H. P. Lovecraft. It also reduces the work I did to a blocky, indistinct mess. I uploaded an enormous file of this video (almost 400Mb) so that there would be a chance people can see it the way it was intended to be viewed. If there was some way to bypass the standard version and have embedding link to only the high quality version, I would happily enable it. But I don't know of any way to do this. It sucks, because I'd love to share this with any and all who might appreciate it, but the truth is I'd rather they never saw it at all if what they see is the standard quality version (even the high quality version reduces the super fast backgrounds under the lyrics to mud). To tread on a Peni guitar is death, to tread on a badly compressed Peni tribute video is instant death...
Why not order Rudimentary Peni's recordings from the source? Click on the link below and repeat after me... "We don't need no stinking mp3 downloads." Grow a chin and buy a CD, Punky Brewster. http://www.southern.net/eu-shop/index.php?artists_id=950&typ efilter=artists_id&main_page=index

CLICK "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY." New, longer edit with different music showing "controlled burning" in Tanzania. I shot this footage while I was in Africa in 2007. Fires are set on purpose, to preserve the traditional ecology. As it was explained to me, if they did not burn away the scrubby growth and underbrush (incredibly the fires burn out naturally without killing the trees) the landscape would turn into an impenetrable, jungle-like terrain. It was a truly surreal sight to witness. Birds by the thousands swoop in to feed on the fleeing insects. The lions in this clip were conscious enough of the fire to keep an eye on it, but they walked a few more feet away and lay down, appearing totally unconcerned. It was hard not to think of the annual, disastrous wildfires that were burning back in the states! And it raises an interesting question. Do you destroy one form of life to preserve another? Is the ecology that is being preserved natural or is it only being maintained in a manner fit for humans? I honestly don't know. I hope that this clip, in some small way, expresses the other-worldliness of being there and witnessing it first hand. It's impossible to describe how bizarre it is to be traveling through wilds of Tanzania while fires, sometimes miles long, burn unattended in the distance or in some cases, only a few feet away from you. I have never seen anything like it in my life, and it certainly isn't a sight I'll ever encounter in New York City! I shot the video while laying on top of the roof of a jeep. The closing shots show a vast, snake-like trail of fire burning across the countryside in the distance as the sun disappears. Caution: Birds may appear closer to fire than they actually were (due to the effects of a telephoto lens.) Music track is from the "Machine Language" CD by Warren Cuccurullo. The track is entitled "Delilah in Action." All sounds were made with a guitar. You can buy the cd here - http://www.amazon.com/Machine-Language-Warren-Cuccurullo/dp/ B0000040PO/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1212997081&sr=1-6

CLICK ON "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY." I followed some members of a Maasai tribe to see how they raid active bee hives for honey while I was visiting Tanzania in 2007. I captured two attempts, and although no honey was found it was fascinating to watch how they do it. It couldn't be simpler. They start a fire and then use burning sticks to smoke the hive (as bee keepers do sans the burning sticks) and make the bees docile. BUT unlike bee keepers, the Maasai do not wear protective gear! Wearing their regular clothes, they reach into the hives with bare arms, often resulting in dozens of stings. It was explained to me that they become somewhat "used to it" (I wonder if any Maasai are allergic to bee stings, and if so, how do they find out?) I can safely say, without hesitation, despite my travels all over the world with various bands and the subsequent wild experiences and indescribable encounters that I've had, that the Maasai I met during my trip were the most incredible and awe inspiring people I have ever encountered. Descended from the most fierce warriors on the planet, they posses a most arresting calm, and the most supreme confidence despite being in one of the last free roam animal areas on earth. To them, obviously, it is natural. They always know what they are doing, and you must place so much trust in them to travel in certain areas, yet they are so kind and gentle, you cannot help but be profoundly humbled in their presence.
The music playing during this clip is an actual recording I made of a Maasai tribe performing in front of a campfire later that same night. It was an incredible experience, and I absolutely love this song, which I've come to think of as "tribal African blues." It was unlike anything I had ever heard before that night. As I listened to them perform this song, I was amazed by the guttural rhythm, which can be counted as "1-2-1-2-3" - the only other time I can recall hearing this rhythm was in the song "Ian Underwood Whips it Out" by Frank Zappa which is all the more bizarre and resonant for me, considering Ian is a relative of mine! Well, since we're all descended from Africa, maybe somehow it makes complete sense.

Shot as part of my upcoming documentary on Japanese bands in NYC (I've played in 4 to date) this is Gelatine live in Brooklyn 2006. The reason I have "Crazy Japanese Girl" in the title of my other Gelatine post is I noticed someone had already uploaded a Gelatine clip with that in the title but had no info about the band in the clip, and I wanted those people to see Gelatine in context, and Seiko in all her glory. This song is called "Mama ga Ita Node" which basically means "Cause My Mom Said So." Seiko (V) Jun (G) Useke (B) Waiko (K) and me, Al Batross (D). After several years of playing with Gelatine they were finally able to locate an able Japanese drummer in NYC and so I left the band in March of 2007. Visit the band at http://www.gelatine5.com

"Breakdowns of 1936." Compilation of bloopers from Warner Bros, including scenes from classic (and not so classic) films including Edward G. Robinson, Pat O' Brien, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. This was originally broadcast almost twenty years ago during the long since defunct (but not forgotten) "Night Flight" television show on the USA cable channel. They used to run things you couldn't see anywhere else on TV at the time (or today for that matter), from videos by Frank Zappa to retro commercials for toothpaste to underground animated short films (such as "Jac Mac and Rad Boy Go"). As someone has pointed out, the porky pig "blooper" that you see cut in to places later in this clip differs from the famous clip most everyone has seen, and seems to have been taken from a work print (hence the X marks where the sound effects were laid in of the hammer.)

"My Family is a Little Weird" Starts dark because stage lights were low but they come up quick. It was a dream come true for me to play drums for the legendary political hardcore punk rock band MDC (Millions of Dead Cops, Multi Death Corporation) from late 2000 to mid 2003. I loved the band from back when I heard their first record at the age of 16 and never dreamed I'd get a chance to join. Included here also is Dave's explanation of how he came to write this song. The line up is Dave Dictor (V) plus Brendan Bekowies (guitar), Matt Van Cura (bass) and me, Al Batross (drums).

"Government Kids" from Ludichrist's set at CBGB. This was one of the earliest tunes ever written for Ludichrist, having been cobbled together by Mark Kanabrocki (the band's original guitarist and the guy who wrote much of what survived through the release of "Immaculate Deception") and myself prior to our first rehearsals with the rest of the band. The ultra simple style I believe grew out of listening to one of our favorite bands Rudimentary Peni, and teaching ourselves how to play songs like "Mice Race" and "Cosmetic Plague." They're still one of my favorite bands, and "Cacophony" is one of my top ten favorite releases of all time. Anyway, "Government Kids" and most of Immaculate Deception was written while Mark and I lived in Syosset, Long Island, and little did we know Syosset would later gain infamy as the town with one of the highest breast cancer rates in the US, now known to have been the result of the "mishandling and storage of certain health endangering elements" in our lovely suburb. So Tommy's lyrics, which were written much later, were somewhat relevant in more ways than one. Me, I'm glad I moved to NYC after high school and yes I still have my breasts.

A man awakes in a strange graveyard. Or does he? Improvised around a thought I had on the spot, it was filmed in one afternoon entirely inside an actual graveyard in Hiro, Tokyo. I shot it on the last day of The Spunks tour of Japan before I had to return to NY. The cast are fellow Spunks members Hajime and Joji. Camera, editing and everything else can be blamed on me (the drummer). As per a Japanese tradition we poured salt over our backs to prevent spirits from following us home. The experience lingered though as we had a slew of technical problems, which reached a peak a few months later when we recorded our new full length Cd and the engineer (through a mysterious computer incident) erased the entire recording from the hard drives and could not recover the data even when sent to Disksavers. As we began to re-record everything from scratch, only weeks before we had to leave for a three week tour, I thought back to this day we made "Hiro Blackout." Had The Spunks been cursed for having filmed inside this graveyard?
