if I may say so, in response to the statement that "coatl" means "snake", I would like to add that it is my understanding that the Nahuatl word "coatl", refers to a cloud. These "entities", clouds, are the bringers of rain, of water, of life.... and water was associated with the snake.

we see this backed up by the use of the word Caan, to describe the sky. This phrase is also used in reference to the snake. In the Yucatan, we see the word Kan appear both in the Tzolkin, as as part of their number system.

we can also trace the movement of the Toltec/Teotiuacano people into the southern empires of the Maya, the country Guatamala gives us a obvious clue to this migration, let's look at the word again but say it with a maya throat, Coatl-Mala, Mala is a yucatec phrase for "passing over something closely".... Guatamala - "place where clouds hover above".
