Rare live performance, cut from the HBO special.
This beautiful, soothing song by Stevie is among her most enigmatic. For each line, gorgeously wrapped in lyrical imagery, there could be two or three possible interpretations.
This is a song of liberation - it is about facing your fears to become fearless. No one is fearless, of course - except superheroes, which we sometimes expect our icons to be. We forget that they are real people with worries and insecurities and that they make mistakes and they worry about failure. Anyone can fail and everyone does sometimes. What's courageous though, is to keep going, to keep trying, to keep soaring to new heights.
After Fleetwood Mac completed the recording of Tusk, Stevie went to Chile for about six weeks to recuperate and reflect on her life. She came back to Phoenix to begin composing, feeling more refreshed. She was quoted as saying, "I was scared to death and intimidated and insecure, afraid and lonely and tired, and I just didn't know what to do really...and Bella Donna really got in there and saved my life".
Although the song seems to mainly deal with Stevie's personal journey, there are parts of the song that may very well have something to do with Lindsey Buckingham. After all, her strong feelings for him are very closely tied to her own quest for happiness and independence.
We know that Stevie has an elusive way of writing. As she said in a 1997 Spin magazine article, she never gives all her secrets away. Even when she gives interviews, she never tells what her songs are about completely. We also know that there are other songs on Bella Donna that deal with her feelings for Lindsey, so it is entirely possible that this song does too.
She looks towards the future - feeling optimistic about her career and her life. I feel Stevie singing this song to herself as a lullaby the same way that she sings it to us, soothing and providing comfort, the way that the Bella donna does for her. The Bella donna is her blessing and her curse. Her talent gives her everything good - fame, success, adulation - but it has also been the source of her misery - strife, jealousy, tension, excess, loneliness. But through it all - Stevie knows that she would not give up her life - it is her destiny.

The pics are from a show Stevie did on december 5th, 1981, in Phoenix, Arizona. That's where she's originally from. It was on the Compton Terrace which was cofounded by her father Jess. John Stewart was the opening act for this awesome but short tour.

This is a Stevie Nicks demo for the song, it's a little slower than what it came out to be. There is even a slower version of this song, but I can't stand that one, so that's why I uploaded this. Well enjoy.
I've put some late eighties pictures to go with it.

When I see him, I feel him Theres an intensness In him, in his eyes He wants me to be with him He wants me with him now
She just seems to be missing How could that happen anyhow
So how can you say Well I dont know what love is You havent and you have no time for it You feel completely indifferent You feel pushed up against the wall And then one day it just almost goes away You spend lots of time alone Sometimes you spend years And you just miss those arms that used to go around you
Night after night No questions asked and Who cares, the cold wind of it all, everytime Well its hard to be civil and its Real hard to be nice But you did it my love everytime
So how can you say well I cant see you Not now, not tomorrow, not until its right Not until None of us is pushed up against the wall I dont know, the cold wind doesnt get you anymore
So today she says well Ive changed my mind Thats a womans right they say Well Im frightened and Im lost and i Cant give you up, not now I need you now Im broken-hearted, broke down Like a little girl Well I need you now, well Im broken hearted Well I broke down, like a little girl

This is a Christine song from the Bare Trees album.
The period of 1971-72 was nothing less than chaotic for Christine McVie. After joining Fleetwood Mac permanently in 1971, she was spending 24 hours a day with husband John-- which was something our lovely Christine was not used to, due to the fact that she had come out of early retirement of being a housewife and didn't see John nearly as much then. It was in these years that Christine had a "barely concealed" affair with Bare Trees engineer Martin Birch after John's drinking routine became stronger and stronger. At this time, they decided to give their bumpy marriage another go.
Why not lie here in my arms And listen to the night You must know you have certain charm And I feel the time is right I think that the third line "You must know you have certain charm" is referring to the fact that Martin IS married, and Christine is too...but Martin's vibe is so strong that she really cannot resist. The "time is right" because John is so "out of it" and Martin is just the thing she needs to break away for now.**
So spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little of your love (or your love) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little of your love (of your love) Lauren had a lot of good ideas on this one. Christine isn't asking for a lot, just a little bit of John's love, which she hasn't seen for a long time. It is thought that Christine had/has low self-esteem, which can come from a man that is only partly there to her. By this I mean what Christine called "John's Jekyll and Hyde Routine", which would come from his drinking. As Lauren reflected, it's like saying, "if it's not too much to ask..."
Now I know that I feel much more Oh, in every single way And it's not the same as before It gets stronger every day
Maybe Christine is saying that she loves him more and more every day, as if she has lost that sight since her affair and all the mad things going on in her life. Maybe "not the same as before" is implying that maybe Chris felt a little pity for John with all the craziness in his life too. So spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little of your love (of your love) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little of your love (of your love)
Now I know how the sun must feel Every time it shines And now I know this time is real And I want you to be mine
Christine is saying that she knows that her love for both men is real and she wants them both. She tries to work things out with John but maybe things with Martin seem to click more. They make her feel almost like she is "shining". So spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little of your love (of your love) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little (just a little bit) Spare me a little of your love

Blue water I sit and I wait for the morning to come Blue water And I wait for the sound of my gypsy Blue water
I sit out at night Hidden out of sight Blue water Blue water And I stare at the sea And the sea smiles for me And the sea is as moving as a lover
I can't give up the night I'm in high tide I'd like to sail the sea I'd like to take you on a slow ride I won't give up the night High tide I'd like to sail the sea I'd like to take you on a...slow ride Slow ride Slow ride
Blue water I sit and I wait for the morning to come Blue water And I wait for the sound Blue water
I sit out at night Hidden out of sight Blue water And I wait for the sound Wait for the sound And I smile at the sea And the sea smiles for me And the sea is as moving as a lover
I can't give up the night I'm in high tide I'd like to sail the sea I'd like to take you on slow ride A slow ride I won't give up the night I'm in high tide I'd like to be your friend I'd love to love you 'til the end 'Til the end
Blue water I sit and I wait for the morning to come Blue water And I wait for the sound of my gyspy Blue water
I sit out at night Hidden out of sight Blue water Blue water And I smile at the sea And then the sea smiles for me And the sea is as moving as a lover A lover
I can't give up the night I'm in high tide I'd like to sail the sea I'd like to take you on a slow ride I can't give up the night I'm in high tide I'd like to be your friend I'd like to love you 'til the end
Blue water I sit and I wait for the morning to come WEBMISTRESS speculates:
This song doesn't have too much going on lyrically; it's a mellow number about getting away from it all and taking a breather, whether on an actual sea or a figurative one. Perhaps "wait[ing] for the sound of [her] gypsy" is waiting for her to come back to herself once she's alone, or even waiting for inspiration to strike, using the term "gypsy" to signify her muse, and the morning coming when she can truly think about her ideas and develop a new one.
KIAS speculates:
This song is beautiful to me. I understand it cause it reminds me of something I've been feeling for a while. Like loving someone & they don't love you back or love you the way you love them. But inspite of this knowledge, you can't give up your love for them. I sit & I wait for the morning to come - (the day my love comes to me) - blue water.
GODDESS OF NYMPHS speculates:
In my course of reading and learning as much as I possibly can about Stevie, I have read that after her friend Robin passed away she rented a house on the beach and wrote and had stated (and I quote this loosely) "I went to the beach and wrote and just had to give "her" (Robin). I feel she is possibly refering to Robin when she says " And I sit and I wait for the sound of my gypsy." I also think that she references the ocean as "Blue Water" because it was very spiritual and healing for her at time she felt very alone....
HENRY speculates:
This is a very simple song to decode. Stevie's favorite place to be is on a boat "Not I ever get on a boat" quoted from an interview that came from the bonus CD of The Dance. The sea she remarks is not unlike the desert where she is from. Stevie equally loves the desert and the sea or water for that matter. The song is her returning to the real Stevie. Recall that when she found that Robin was terminally ill, she took a trip with her and Sharon on a boat; there are photos of this trip posted on the web. So my interpretation, is that Stevie, returning yearning to the REAL Stevie... back to herself, before the fame and fortune.

Beauty and the beast first take, Stevie tells about the inspiration for this song and then plays it on the piano.
The original lyrics (that she sings here) go something like this:
You're not a stranger to me And you are something to see You don't even know how to please You say a lot but you're unaware how to leave
My love lives in a world that is not mine An old child misunderstood out of time Timeless is the creature who is wise And timeless is the prisoner in disguise
Oh who is the beauty who the beast Would you die of grieving when I leave Two children too blind to see I could die in your shadow I believe
My love is a man who's not been tamed My love lives in a world of false pleasure and pain We come from different worlds we are the same I never doubted your beauty I've changed I never doubted your beauty I've changed I've changed

Set me free, set me free Is this what you wanted to happen to me? Golden wings in the sunset Take me back All alone I waited There was no one to be there
There were dreams to be sold, yeah You're like my 24 karat gold Chain of chains, yeah
There was some love to be shown They said you might be comin' back to town Said you might be comin' back to town
Let me be, set me free All alone I waited There was no one to be there In the rain she lay face-down What is this freedom that she wanted? What kind of freedom? What kind of game? What kind of freedom? What kind of game?
There were some dreams to be sold My dreams, my 24 karat My 24 karat, my 24 karat gold Chain of chains
Is this what you wanted? Oh, but he was nowhere to be found Here comes the cold chill
Ooh, 24 karat chain Chain of chains 24 karat chain Chain of chains
But there was some love to be shown Ooh, you're like my 24 karat gold Chain of chains, yeah There were some islands to be found They said that you might be comin' back to town Ooh, you might be comin' back to town, ooh
Set me free Is this what you wanted to happen to me? Golden wings in the sunset Take me back All alone I waited But there was no one to be there, ooh
And there is a world that rises in Beside the wind rolls And there is a world that rises Within the wind rolls Set me free Set me free....
WEBMISTRESS speculates:
I think she's comparing Lindsey to a "24 Karat Gold" chain because of his controlling nature and because of the fact that she can't shake him: she's still connected to him even though she's left him. "Dreams to be sold" recalls the song Dreams that she wrote about their breakup - "have you any dreams you'd like to sell?" And then of course, the "chain of chains" recalls the song of the same name, The Chain.
This song seems to me to be about sex versus love, and how the physical connection she has with Lindsey "chains" her to him despite her desire for "freedom." First off, she says "He was nowhere to be found" and then says "here comes the cold chill." It reminds me of "You'll forget the chill of love but not the strain" from Planets of the Universe. I think she uses chill often in the context of the physical sensations of sex, and so here she's saying that she has the sex but not the love. She wanted Lindsey to set her free, but he won't let her be. There's still a connection between them, but it's purely physical. It makes Stevie unhappy because she's not really free as long as they do that. "What kind of freedom?" Or is it some kind of game? And since Lindsey still can make her physically desire him, she still sits alone and waits for him - that relationship still takes her back.
I really like the vivid image called up by the phrase "in the rain she lay face-down" - very effective and communicative of the despairing tone of the song. She can't break the chain.

For you, therell be no more crying, For you, the sun will be shining, And I feel that when Im with you, Its alright, I know its right
To you, Ill give the world To you, Ill never be cold cause I feel that when Im with you, Its alright, I know its right.
And the songbirds are singing, Like they know the score, And I love you, I love you, I love you, Like never before.
And I wish you all the love in the world, But most of all, I wish it from myself.
And the songbirds keep singing, Like they know the score, And I love you, I love you, I love you, Like never before, like never before.

Lyrics (guess) Been thinkin' about you Talkin' 'bout long, lonely days Got no money in my pocket Think I'll drink the nighttime away I've been thinkin' about you Talkin' 'bout long, lonely days Got no money in my pocket Guess I'll drink the nighttime away Don't you know if you're busy? After Welch announced that he was leaving the band, Fleetwood began searching for a possible replacement. While Fleetwood was scouting Van Nuys, California, the house engineer for California's Sound City Studios, Keith Olsen, played him a track titled "Frozen Love" (from Buckingham Nicks, Polydor PD 5058, September 1973), which he had mixed there for an American band, Buckingham Nicks. Fleetwood liked it, and was introduced to the guitarist from the band, Lindsey Buckingham, who coincidentally was at Sound City that day recording some demos. Fleetwood soon asked him to join. Buckingham agreed, on the condition that his musical partner and girlfriend, Stephanie "Stevie" Nicks, also become part of the band; Fleetwood agreed to this.
In 1975, the new line-up released the self-titled Fleetwood Mac, which has since informally occasionally become known as the "White Album" due to its cover (this is not to be confused with The Beatles' White Album). The album proved to be a breakthrough for the band and became a huge hit (reaching #1 in the US). Among the hit singles from this album were Christine McVie's "Over My Head" and "Say You Love Me", and Stevie Nicks' "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" (actually a hit twenty years later on "The Dance" album) (sample (help•info)).
But in 1976, with the success of the band also came the end of John and Christine McVie's marriage, as well as Buckingham's and Nicks' longtime romantic relationship. Even Fleetwood was in the midst of divorce proceedings from his wife Jenny. Pressure was put on Fleetwood Mac to release a successful follow-up album, which, when combined with its new-found wealth, led to creative and personal tensions, fueled by large amounts of drug and alcohol consumption.
The album the band members released in 1977 was Rumours, in which the band members laid bare the emotional turmoil experienced at that time. Produced largely by Buckingham, it became the best-selling album of the year, spending over six months at the top of the U.S. chart, and was the recipient of the Grammy Award for Album Of The Year for 1977. Hit singles included Buckingham's "Go Your Own Way", Nicks's "Dreams" (sample (info)), and Christine McVie's "Don't Stop" and "You Make Loving Fun". Buckingham's "Second Hand News," Nicks's "Gold Dust Woman" and "The Chain" (the only song written by all five bandmates) also received a lot of radio airplay. By 2003, Rumours had sold over 19 million copies in the U.S. alone (certified as a diamond album by the RIAA), and a total of 30 million copies worldwide making it one of the biggest selling albums of all time.
