When that skilled newbie guitarist, who was featured on a national radio program within his first two years of playing, commands his instrument with only one hand, most would call that amazing.

John Denner, 35, is an impressive guitar player even if you don't consider that a birth defect left him without a right hand. And Denner wouldn't have it any other way. He first won an online guitar contest with an audio clip. When he submitted the accompanying video, people were blown away, he said. "I was so afraid about being this disabled, one-handed person playing a two-handed instrument," Denner said in an interview at his Killingworth home.

"You've got to be good. You've got to be really good." His determination to best two-handed players made his methods for learning the guitar unconventional. Instead of toiling over scales and learning to read music, Denner learned to play the "hardest guitar solo on the planet" — Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" — Denner says he put his own spin on the famous guitar solo in an effort to make it his own!
