Larry Jon Wilson, a singer/songwriter somewhere between Tony Joe White and Jim Croce, cut four LPs in the second half of the 1970s, none of which sold many copies (New Beginnings, Let Me Sing My Song To You, Loose Change, Sojourner). It's hard to understand why, because he's simply great. Luckily enough director James Szalapski filmed him doing the self-penned "Ohoopee River Bottomland" in a recording studio in 1975 for his movie "Heartworn Highways", a must-have for any fan of the mid-seventies new country scene. Other performances include singer/songwriters Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Johny Hiatt, David Allan Coe, a very young Steve Earle, Charlie Daniel Band and Barefoot Jerry with "Two Mile Hike", yet another hard to get piece of great music. The movie is available on a 2003 dvd in an extended version. Larry Jon Wilson still performs occasionally and cut two great songs for the album "The Country Soul Revue - Testifying", produced by Dan Penn. PS: Somehow the sound wasn't on the clip, so I edited it from the soundtrack.
Update: The new cd "Larry Jon Wilson" was released on 1965 Records in July 2008.
James Endeacott, proprietor of eclectic record label 1965: We've just signed a guy who's 70 years old -- Larry John Wilson -- who was mates with Kris Kristofferson in the '70s. He's not made a record in 28 years and he's just made one for us, just him and a guitar recorded in a room overlooking a beach in Florida, and it's heartbreaking.

Tony Joe White was a guest on the Johnny Cash Show twice. This is the highly entertaining "Polk Salad Annie" duet he and Johnny Cash did on his first appearance in episode no. 27, Aprik 08, 1970. They're really enjoying playing together, and it's fun to watch. The other song Tony Joe White sang that night was "High Sheriff of Calhoun Parish".
THIS AND OTHER GREAT PERFORMANCES ARE NOW AVAILABLE ON A 2-DVD-SET "BEST OF THE JOHNNY CASH TV SHOW". HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE!!!

Bobby Darin cramped everything into the mere 37 years he lived. He was a multi-talented man who played the drums, piano, harmonica, guitar and what not. He was a successful actor, energetic entertainer, and a superb singer. Of course he is known mostly for his interpretations of "Mack The Knife", "Beyond The Sea", his early hits "Splish-Splash" and "Dream Lover". But among the many songs he wrote, arranged and produced, he also wrote and recorded great folk songs. He did a great version of Tim Hardin's "If I Was A Carpenter", his last real hit. After the assasinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, who's campaign he promoted, he wrote more politically motivated songs. They wouldn't become hits, but they are still great songs. "Simple Song of Freedom" is just that and unfortunately has lost none of it's topicality. Seems like politicians haven't learned much since the 1960s. This is taken from a 1970's TV Special "A Night With Bobby Darin" and can be found on the DVD of the same name (Umbrella Entertainment), which also has a nice 43 min. biography.

I would have never guessed, but Louis Armstrong was a guest on the Johnny Cash Show. This
I would have never guessed, but Louis Armstrong was a guest on the Johnny Cash Show. This and the story about Satchmo and Jimmie Rogers show how diverse musical tastes these men had and once again that music is a great connector. This is from episode 38, Oct., 28, 1970 and must be one of Satchmo's last performances. He was such a great performer right to the end and the Nashville audience and Johnny just loved him. Louis Armstrong cracks everybody up at the start of the song: Let's give it to 'em in black and white.
