I just finished writing a book called "Gang of Daggers." I'm going to see about getting it published now. *crosses fingers*
While writing it, I was thinking and came up with an idea for a tv show.
Make it semi-reality based, film in a high school, and keep it low budget with few special, visual effects and cheap sets (not to mention a new set of actors every four years).
The story: A group of kids discover a magical way to transport to another world. There, they discover they can live and act like adult men, and that killing is part of daily life. And if you are good with a sword, you can get rich.
The boys become mercenaries and adventures follow as the boys discover magic, women, and surviving in pitched battles.
And by the way, all the fights are un-scripted.
That's right. All the battles, duels, sparring matches, assassinations, and drunken brawls will be real. Well, except for the drunken brawl, no under-age kids should be drinking, but let's face it, giving a chance, they would. (And yeah, not ALL of the fights will be un-scripted, but most will.)
So think of it like "Lord of the Flies," "Harry Potter," "Lost Boys," "Young Guns," "Deadwood," "Rome," "WWE," "UFC,"Ninja Warrior," and a bit of sword play all rolled into one.
If possible, I would want Josh Whedon's help with this project. I would love to see what he could do given this type of fantasy element where characters can "die" at random.
I actually think of the end result on the actors as like an academy experience. But here's the thing, these kids will have certain responsibilities.
1. Fighting is their life. Their opponents will be of varying degrees of skill, but the kid is expected to fight with his best ability at all times. 2. The storylines and plots are semi-reality. Meaning that it is expected of the kids to take storyline hints and improv the dialogue. (All dialogue is thus "realistic" and very accessible to the audience.) 3. Each actor is expected to do well in school, and in fact devote him/herself to a subject of interest and learn everything about it, as part of their character. 4. Each actor learns a foriegn language to the best of their ability. 5. Each actor selected to be part of the "main group" in the show, will be expected to perform duties and act as if they were really their characters. (i.e. if the character had to clean the stables, the actor would clean the stables, even if the camera was not on him. He would not change, either, so any later filming would reflect the actor dirty and tired) 6. Each kid actor would receive a bonus check after graduating high school. ;)
Anyways, this is just a crazy, random idea, but I'm curious if anyone else will dig it.
It would feature crazy, realistic violence, and storylines of people having to deal with the fact that they are killing and being killed.
(In fact, if we move it to college, then we can get nudity.... uhm....)
If anything, I think it would be a great way for high schoolers who want to act, get a chance. Also, since I would like the school to appear to be very urban and poor and gang riddled, that would allow the students to just go nuts in terms of their outfits and behaviors.
Also, we'd film all the events that normally happen at the school, so feature home coming, prom, teachers, students, awards, everything.
And by the way, if you want to read my book, in rough draft, go here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sky-writing/

"A Gang of Daggers" tv show, based off of this book I have just written.
For the tv show, there would be magic, but it would be real subtle. It's not going to be flashy, wierd sound stuff.
The scenario I was going to talk about was the idea that Joey, in his senior year, has developed a doppelganger, a clone of himself. It is a magical construct that appears and disappears at will. Joey sends the construct out to do night jobs. So it will work at a radio station, as a janitor, whatever. The thing is, it's dumb, dull. It has no personality, a blank stare. People think "Joey" is retarded, give the clone a wide berth and don't interact.
Then I thought, what if "Joey" gets on the metro at one particular point every day and stands in one spot, looking one way everyday, regardless of who is there. And someone finally takes notice and "freaks out." Anyways, Joey would occasionally be seen with "Joey" and that might be interesting if someone makes the connection.
Otherwise, the only other magic is people things disappearing and appearing at random, because they would have the ability to turn things invisible and bring certain things to themselves at a whim.
In "reality," Joey is a loser, and so recruited by "the gang." As a result, Joey changes, grows, develops and gets buff, and he's got a purpose, and he's always busy.
So the same group of kids now notice Joey and wonder about him. When they stop and ask him, Joey blows them off. Letting them know he knows how to fight, with weapons, but they think he's been practicing kung fu or karate.
In their senior year, the seniors will be responsible for training the younger kids, but otherwise, they are the people who have survived leading military campaigns on this other world. They have won victory and acclaim and amassed body and kill counts. Senior year is a breeze, a vacation for them, they can now think about college.
"Sword Camp," where kids can come for however many months they can, and learn to fight with weapons, and get involved in filming the "army" scenes, and battles, too. Maybe 13, but 14, 15, and on up kids can go and learn to fight, and have fun. And sweat.
If a person can become a master with a particular weapon, they can come for free and train people how to use a weapon. The battles would be realistic, in a wierd way.
Society of Creative Anachronism would dig it, as well as Real Life Action Role Playing games (LARPers). You could also, fairly easily, organize this event.
The other reason why I think the New York High School of the Arts would appreciate filming the show there is because the school will conceivably start from a horrible state of affairs, with gang violence, graphitti, and things being in chaos. But the school will clean up it's act, and show how to effectively do that, teachers and students can learn how to properly handle certain situations, how to react. So later, there can be Columbine and Virginia Tech situations and how to react to those, and survive, and how to prevent.
Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will dig this show, hopefully. Actors can attempt any role or situation, and we'll see if we can film it, and get it in. Heck, even kids could attempt assuming gang leadership.
It would really help kids resumes.
I support the arts.

Knightly Games is located in Octillo Plaza, EL Centro (to the left as you come off the I-8).
The store owner told me the gaming side was declining. I suggested going unto school campuses and either setting up a booth or flyers to attract kids, but she stated that the schools were reluctant to do that.
In my opinion, allowing kids to read comics, play table top games, and collect trading cards is a good thing. It encourages socialization, team play, and trains deductive reasoning.
Pokemon is a huge international trading card game, and right now, kids all over the United States participate in leagues where they compete against each other, and often at local comic stores.
Since Knightly Games closes at 8 p.m., it also makes a neat way for kids to gather and play games together, almost like a babysitter service, but at a store, and with a clerk monitoring behavior.
If you can, spread the word and encourage people to go to Knightly Games.

My video showing scenes from the HBO Rome series and the movie "Gladiator". Featuring the song "Forever", the credits song of the game "Rome: Total War".
Lyrics:
What awaits us? A cloud has fallen on our shore The mighty hand and sword of Roman war And I'll be brave, be strong, be true, my love And I'll be waiting for you, forever...
My love you march to war defiant May god returneth you triumphant And you'll be brave, be strong, be true, my love And I'll be waiting for you, forever...
"And remember this above all: Our Roman gods are watching. Make sure they are not ashamed!"
How can I wait unknowing? This is the price of war We rise with noble intentions And we risk all that is pure We are only as great as our hearts will allow What awaits us?
Forever...
What will become of us? What will be, will be But I hope and I pray, every single day You'll come to me, come home to me, come home to me...
