Ever since I heard "Maggie May" by Rod Steward back in '71 I have just loved the sound of the mandolin. I have never come around to owning one and it seems that I never have had the opportunity to learn to play one.
Today I went out and bought my very first normal capo. It is a lovely thing from my favorite maker of capos. What I discovered is that if I strap it on very high up on the neck I get that tingling mandolin sound. So I played around with different tunings and this is what finally came out. I think you will agree that some of the passages sound a little "mandoliny".

I have always been fascinated by the creative process...you know, when suddenly you find yourself with a new tune and you really do not know how it came about. That is how it happens to me. I tune my guitar in some odd tuning and just sit and try out different chord changes and then suddenly everything falls into place. It is very peculiar.
The title of this tune reflects just that. You get something from nowhere.

Sono sempre stato affascinato dal processo della creatività...Sapete, quando ti trovi con una nuova canzone senza capire com'è venuta fuori. E' proprio cosi che succede a me. Accordo la chitarra in qualche accordatura strana e comincio a provare diversi accordi ed improvvisamente tutto si allinea e trova il suo posto. E' molto strano.
Il titolo di questa canzone riflette proprio questo. Ricevi qualcosa dal nulla. ( Something From Nowhere)

When I was a boy I lived in Africa for many years. There is something very special about the atmosphere you breathe there. It could have something to do with the smell of the charcoal fires, the heat, the friendly people, the ever-present wild animals and, of course, the music...that happy, bubbly, sparkling, rhythmic, hypnotizing, mesmerizing music that flows to you from every corner where people meet..
I believe that the world's best guitar players live south of the equator in Africa. They have a way of incorporating rhythm, feeling and happy riffs into a wonderful mix that is unknown to most of the world. Paul Simon did a great job of exposing some of this talent in his epic work "Graceland". I hope you will hear a little of my Africa in this tune.

Quando ero un ragazzo ho vissuto per tanti anni in Africa. C'è un'atmosfera molto speciale che inspiri. Potrebbe essere a causa dell'odore dei fuochi di carbone, il calore, la gentilezza della gente, gli animali selvatici e, senza dubbio, la musica...Quella musica allegra, spumeggiante, ritmica, ipnotizzante e seducente che ti raggiunge da tutti gli angoli dove la gente s'incontra.
Penso che i miglior chitarristi vivano al sud della linea equatoriale, in Africa. Hanno un modo di mischiare il ritmo, il feeling e le melodie allegre in una musica che, alla maggior parte del mondo, è sconosciuta.
Paul Simon ha fatto un ottimo lavoro esponendo un pò di questo talento nel suo mitico lavoro "Graceland". Spero che tu possa sentire un po' della mia Africa in questa melodia.

This tune was supposed to be called "Appreciation" because of all the wonderful things that I have in my life.
I am also deeply grateful to the people who decided to feature my video "Red Hills" first on Italian Youtube and then Globally, to all the wonderful people that have seen and commented on my work, and to all of you who decided to subscribe to my channel. Thank you.
Why it is called "Mockingbird and Traffic" is because, as all of you know who make your own videos, we fight a loosing battle against background noise. I personally have a happy mockingbird in the tree outside my window that sings from dawn till dusk and then off course the ever-present traffic...
I wouldn't mind getting the bird onto my recording but the rest...
I think somebody is on my side, though, because the traffic stopped the 2 minutes and 42 seconds it took to record the tune! Now, that is something else to be grateful for!

Il nome di questa canzone doveva essere "Appreciation" (Apprezzamento) in omaggio a tutte le cose belle che ho la fortuna di avere nella mia vita.
Sono anche molto grato per le persone che hanno messo la mia canzone "Red Hills" in primo piano su Youtube Italia e poi Youtube mondiale, per tutte le persone che hanno visto il video e che hanno lasciato un commento, e per tutti voi che avete deciso di iscrivervi al mio canale. Grazie.
Si chiama "Mockingbird and Traffic' (Il Merlo e il Traffico) perché, come tutti sanno che registrano i propri video, abbiamo sempre il problema dei rumori di sottofondo. Io personalmente ho un merlo nell'albero davanti alla mia finestra che canta dall'alba al tramonto, e poi c'e' sempre il traffico...
Accetterei volentieri il canto dell'uccello nella mia registrazione, ma il traffico...
Penso, comunque, che io abbia qualcuno dalla mia parte perché il traffico si e' bloccato proprio per 2 minuti e 42 secondi, durante la registrazione del video! Anche questo è un ottimo motivo per esserne grato!
