For the best short films, you can check Imdb's list of Top 50 shorts. Some of them are here on the Tube like Das Rad, More, etc. If you checked my subsriptions, there's a couple who are into stop motion films and obscure Russian animation. Check them out if you like.

i believe film can be mindless entertainment such as bad boys or the such but it can also be a window into another world or something that brings out a certain emotion in you. It can be linear in its story telling [such as the departed] or open ended [2001 a space odyssey or most david lynch] It can also vizalize a novel or offer a different interpretation of a novel [naked lunch] The boundaries are endless and will only get more creative as time goes on.

I may have to check out my Movie Guide later just to be sure about Cinema Paradiso but I'm 95% sure that's the difference between the two versions.

The Director's Cut is longer. While the original ends IIRC with the hero watching the spliced kissing scenes with tears in his eyes (oooh, such a lovely ending!), the DC ends with the hero meeting the same girl, now older and happily married with kids, I think. I don't remember how it ended exactly though. I like the theatrical release better. Re: film. Just like any other artform, film exists to entertain, inform, educate, and in some cases, simply just because it is beautiful (depends on the filmmaker's definition of beauty, of course) art. Hope that made sense. : )

Cinema Paradiso is a favorite! There are two versions though. I like the theater version more than the Director's Cut. Two very different endings.

Mmmm popcorn and a good flick - - perfect! I just watched Bravo's 100 Scariest Film Moments and it reminded me that American cinema has some nice gore, too - - Cronenberg, Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, etc. Also, I keep forgetting about Italian gore with Argento and Cannibal Holocaust, for example. Oh, and I remember seeing the entire Audition film here on YT, so maybe you want to see that, too. Maybe you have. Enjoy! : )

I have seen the first few parts of Suicide Club. Subs were too small to read. Re: Japanese gore 'uproar' - same thing with naked children. In European cinema, it's perfectly normal (My Life as a Dog, for example). In the US, it's child pornography (ex. Pretty Baby, absolutely gorgeous Malle film with a young Brooke Shields).
