SO YOU STILL WANT A COCKATOO?? LISTEN!!!
DESCRIPTION: I had bought a DVD from the INDONESIAN PARROT PROJECT ("The People and Parrots of Wild Indonesia") hoping that our wild-caught Moluccan Cockatoo Molly would enjoy seeing and hearing the sights and sounds of her native land again after so many years in captivity. Unfortunately, there are only about 5 minutes of footage of just a few wild Moluccan Cockatoos HIGH up in the trees on the 30-minute DVD. The video includes a lot more footage of the PEOPLE of Indonesia.
AS SOON AS MOLLY HEARD THE VOICES OF THE PEOPLE AND THE MUSIC THEY PLAYED, SHE BECAME EXTREMELY AGITATED! SHE BEGAN PACING and SCREAMING BLOODY-MURDER WHICH TRIGGERED SOMETHING IN NANA AND SHE JOINED IN in SYMPATHY. OBVIOUSLY, MOLLY REMEMBERED WHAT HAPPENED TO HER SO MANY YEARS AGO AT THE HANDS OF HER CRUEL INDONESIAN CAPTORS: IT BROKE MY HEART AND BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES (I can hardly re-watch my own video and will NEVER play this DVD again in front of the birds!). It seems that towards the end, Molly tries to calm NANA down by cooing softly to her. THIS IS A VERY SAD VIDEO... If we could just stop the suffering of our beautiful Feathered Friends at the hands of the human race!
NOTE: MOLLY RECOVERED QUICKLY THOUGH AND EAGERLY ATE HER BELOVED SUGAR SNAP PEAS. CLICK ON the VIDEO RESPONSE Video: "Moluccan Cockatoo MOLLY IS HAPPY AGAIN eating SugarSnapPeas"

Here is our 4th Parrot: NIKO, the AFRICAN GREY. We adopted him in 2005 and don't know much about him other than that he was probably stuck in a tiny cage with little or NO interaction or human touch at all and NEVER let out of his cage. When we first got him, he LUNGED at us viciously ready to take a chunk of flesh out of our bodies with his formidable big beak if we got any closer than a foot to his cage. It took him MONTHS to just dare venture out and climb on TOP of his cage. Since then, he has made GREAT progress and has stopped the lunging. The aggressive biting has subsided considerably as well! A couple of months ago, he started climbing off his cage and began exploring the floor around his cage. The latest and most gratifying development is that he seems to finally be looking for closer human contact: he now walks over to the TV tray by the couch, climbs up on it, and lets me ever so gently (and carefully!) touch his head. Maybe one day he will actually let me scratch it for real! His world is getting bigger at last!!! :)
As usual, you can HEAR high-pitched loud-mouth Rainbow Lory Twillie in the background and SEE Umbrella Cockatoo Nana busily re-arranging the paper at the bottom of her cage.

MOLLY recovered QUICKLY from her screaming ordeal that was triggered by the sounds of her native Indonesia (see my other Video: " Our MOLUCCAN and UMBRELLA COCKATOO SCREAMING TOGETHER!!!").
I got her a bowl of her favorite Sugar Snap Peas and a Lettuce Leaf and that seemed to help her realize that all is well in her world! The photo at the end is an old one, but she still enjoys her corn cob every day! :)
As usual, you can also hear African Grey, Niko, and Umbrella Cockatoo, Nana, making some 'comments' in the background...

This comes with special greetings to Susan in Tasmania in memory of Larry, her special little Lorikeet friend.
You've HEARD him doing his "Siren" imitation in the background of my video featuring Molly, our Camera-Shy Moluccan Cockatoo.... So, now, HEEEERE is Rainbow Lorikeet TWILLIE himself splishing 'n a splashing thru his bath bowl plus doing a little dancing and a little flirting in between while making a general happy mess. When he is satisfied that he is wet enough, he likes to skin a grape and spread the juice all over his feathers. Guess that's the Lory version of putting on perfume... The pink ball is his beloved sidekick and is ALWAYS within reach -- he goes NOWHERE without it!
Note: Twillie's cage is the one on the right -- the small one on the table behind him is a spare cage for all the parrots to play around with when they are out and about. Lories are extremely active and need a big cage PLUS lots of SUPERVISED time out!!! They also have special dietary needs and are a LOT more messy than the average parrot. Since they eat nectar and fruit rather than seed, their droppings are almost liquid and they like to squirt them out of their cages in any direction. That's in addition to slinging the nectar all around which dries like CEMENT on the walls! All that makes for a lot of extra 'fun' clean-up...

Lately, our 2 dogs started howling in protest when one (or both) of our Cockatoos begin hollering. DACHSHUND Teddi (4) usually starts and then BORDER COLLIE Mix Sampson (3) joins in. The COCKATOO squawking in the next room is NANA, our spunky Umbrella Cockatoo (see my other Video "NANA SCREAMING"). She was complaining about my having left the room. Never a dull moment around here...

Molly usually 'freezes' and turns into a Pillar when she sees the camcorder, so I was happy to catch her off guard for a few seconds while she was playing with some paper on top of NANA's cage. As you can see, I was QUICKLY detected and she turned her head towards me to eye that strange contraption in my hand...and FROZE......End of Video...
The "SIREN" you hear in the background is little RAINBOW LORY TWILLIE objecting to not being the center of attention. You can now SEE him splishing and splashing thru his bath bowl in his own video.
To see what Molly does OFF CAMERA, watch "OUR COCKATOO ACTING CRAZY"...it may be a while before I will be able to capture MOLLY doing THAT on camera...
MOLLY's SAD BACKGROUND: Molly is a wild-caught Moluccan Cockatoo whom we ransomed from a pet store in 1998 for $500 where she was lingering in abject terror. We have NO clue as to her age. All we DO know is that she went thru HELL at the hands of man...as a consequence, she trusts NOBODY except me...

Towards the end of winter, some mice decided that my garage would make a great home providing shelter, safety and a reliable food source from the nearby bird feeder. Now that it's warm, I tried to convince them (nicely) that it was time to move...and was ignored. So I bought a large humane mouse trap and one finally ventured inside! She (or he) now has a new home in the nearby woods... I know there are more...

After her exhausting screaming fit (SEE my other video "OUR UMBRELLA COCKATOO SCREAMING"), NANA crawled under her favorite blanket to snuggle and settled back down...
BACKGROUND: We adopted Nana (aka Fred) in 2005 after she was given up by her previous owners. She is a sweet and cuddly, albeit very spunky, young Umbrella Cockatoo who is currently struggling with reproductive hormonal urges that are terribly frustrating to her (and us). They include nest building behavior (e.g. compulsive paper shredding) and the kind of screaming you hear in my other video that drowns out everything and everybody else. (With 4 Parrots, we record everything we want to watch onto a DVR!)
