"Jihad: A Just Struggle or Unjust Violence?" by Zaid Shakir Purchase the full-length lecture at http://www.MeccaCentric.com or call 1-800-607-9810
An excellent lecture for those seeking the Muslim perspective on this very important topic. Zaid Shakir takes a comprehensive look at the concept of "jihad" by analyzing its linguistic meaning, its derivatives, and then the actual Qur'anic meaning. His outline covers the jihad (or struggle) of purifying the soul, the jihad of physically fighting in the way of Islam, the jihad with the non-antagonist non-Muslims, and the jihad with the shaitan (devil). In doing this, he explores many interesting topics such as terrorism, situations that justify the use of violence, the various tools one can utilize in struggling against the self, the concept of love and compassion with non-Muslims, and the struggle with our families, children, and spouses. He concludes with a commentary on the role of a Muslim in a non-Muslim land according to the shari'ah. This talk was given at Northwestern University in Chicago and is ideal for schools, libraries, and Muslim student organizations. It is highly recommended for both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Other topics discussed: the destruction of the Buddha statues in Afghanistan by the Taliban, what should be the Muslim's response to the argument by some, like Ghandi, that pacifism is more noble than violence, undertaking jihad in defense of non-Muslims, and the need to establish institutions that can assist in eliminating the conditions that result in violence.

"Islam, World Peace and September 11th" by Jamal Badawi Purchase the full-length lecture at http://www.MeccaCentric.com or call 1-800-607-9810
Using a very fact-of-the-matter approach with the Iowa State University audience, Dr. Jamal Badawi presents the true Islamic viewpoints on the many pertinent issues challenging Muslims in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. He discusses the concept of peace in Islam, the misconceptions of jihad, and how to properly combat the negative frenzy that has been cast upon the Muslim community in light of the tragedy. Dr. Badawi emphasizes that not trying to attain a peaceful means of communication and resolution of conflicts goes against the very nature of Islam. He also elaborates on the "cut-and-paste" approach to interpreting the Holy Qur'an, a tactic utilized especially by the media, whereby verses are taken completely out of their context and historical setting to incorrectly paint a violent picture of Islam. It is this "cut-and-paste" approach, as the speaker explains, that contributes to the improper understanding of the word "jihad" and the mythical concept of "holy war". Lastly, Badawi addresses the September 11th events by denouncing the horrific attacks and clearly stating that they are un-Islamic, despite the excuse that some extreme groups may use that political means may give legitimacy to the attacks. As Badawi puts it, there is no separation between religion and politics in Islam, thus to give one preference over the other is against Islam in the first place. Dr. Badawi concludes by considering the silver lining in the very dark cloud by addressing some positive things that can result out of this devastating tragedy. This lecture is absolutely essential because it brings into focus Islam's stance on terrorism and helps both Muslims and non-Muslims to understand the balanced approach to these issues. It is a presentation ideal for Muslims seeking new perspectives on how to deal with any scrutiny they may be experiencing and how to approach this very sensitive subject with co-workers, friends, and even family. For non-Muslims, it is a wonderful presentation meant to dispel the usual misconceptions that may result from a lack of knowledge and/or constant exposure to the media bias about Islam.
Other topics discussed: Islamic guidelines of war, life after death, Muslims relating to the Jews and Christians, the Prophets, the diversity of the human race, and peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims.

Based on a seemingly trivial hadith in which the Prophet (P) said "Eat with your right hand", imam Siraj Wahhaj passionately delivers a khutbah that makes clear to the believer the profound position of the Prophet Muhammad (P), the weightiness of his teachings, and the responsibility on those who claim to follow his way. Imam Siraj gives the believers hope for Paradise but a great sacrifice must be made on our part. Follow him as he maps out the path to Paradise in showing us what that sacrifice is and inspiring us to make it without any excuses.

"Women In Islam: Through Western Eyes" by Lisa Killinger Purchase the full-length lecture at http://www.MeccaCentric.com or call 1-800-607-9810
How are Muslims perceived as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks? Do people associate Islam with terrorism more or less since September 11th? Muslim women with their head-coverings are on the frontlines since they stand out in the crowd. They must, therefore, be equiped with the proper knowledge of Islam as well as the knowledge of how they are perceived so they can respond to the many questions and comments they may face in their interaction with non-Muslims. This lecture serves as a tool to help in this great challenge as Dr. Lisa Killinger, an Amercian convert to Islam, shares her experiences with non-Muslims both before and after September 11th. She opens by telling her story of how she discovered Islam in 1979 on the Iowa State University campus. She then continues by echoing the question asked by her own mother upon her conversion, "What kind of woman would want to be a Muslim, afterall they are oppressed!" So Dr. Killinger debunks this myth by outling the status of women in pre-Islamic Arabia and how Islam liberated and dignified them by giving them rights which are still upheld to this day. Some of the rights she discusses in this talk: the right to vote, to inheritence, to divorce, to the use of birth control, to marriage to whomever is desired, and to an education. Nevertheless, the actions of some Muslims may speak to the contrary but, as the speaker reminds the audience, these actions must be distinguished from the teachings of the religion itself. All too often the cultural practices of a person get confused with the religious practices. The speaker also looks at the example of Aslamia: the first female physician in Islam, modesty and the head-covering common to all the Abrahamic faiths, the example of Khadijah, how to explain polygamy to others, Islamic prohibitions that benefit women, non-Muslim attitudes about hijab (head covering), and the role of Muslim women in a non-Muslim society. The lecture is concluded with Dr. Killinger sharing the results of a post-9/11 survey about non-Muslim perceptions of Muslim women.

"Rights of Muslim Women and Their Potential For Impact in Society" by Rasha al-Disuqi and Aminah Assilmi Purchase the full-length lecture at http://www.MeccaCentric.com or call 1-800-607-9810
Rasha al-Disuqi begins this panel by analyzing the Muslim woman's goal here in the United States. Comparing this goal with that of the secular feminist movement here, she provides an overview of the rights granted to Muslim women so that people can recognize the benefits to society when these rights are applied. Theoretically Muslim women have the rights, but few know exactly what to do with them. The speaker provides a fresh perspective on this very important subject by looking at seven main rights that Islam affords to women in the context of modern-day American society. These rights are as follows: the right of vicegerency, the right to live, the right to financial support, the right to an education, the right to legal testimony and inheritance, the right to being treated kindly, and the right to representation on the board of a masjid. In discussing these rights, she covers many issues that are very often misunderstood, not only by non-Muslims, but by Muslims themselves such as the responsibility of da'wah, women's voice as "aurah" (a type of nakedness), the hadith that speaks about deficiency in women, the degree of men over women, and the Muslim woman's participation in society.
The second speaker, Aminah Assilmi, tackles the misconceptions pertaining to Muslim women in American society and explains that if Muslims want to have an impact on people and make a change, they have to take seriously how they relate to people and how the teachings of Islam are explained to them. The main misconceptions she covers are wife-beating, polygamy, and the hijab (head covering).
Other topics discussed by both speakers: different roles of men and women, women reciting the Qur'an in public, women wearing the hijab with tight clothes, women as politicians, women going outside the home for leisure, and the often misunderstood hadith (prophetic saying) about women in hell.

"Winning Our Children Back to Islam" by Jeffrey Lang Purchase the full-length lecture at http://www.MeccaCentric.com or call 1-800-607-9810
A critical talk that pleads for radical introspection and the need to return to the Mecca model in our attitudes and daily affairs. In a charismatic and straight-forward presentation, Dr. Jeffrey Lang moves the Iowa audience by sharing his experience as a Muslim convert over the past 20 years. Based on his new book "Losing My Religion", he looks at the reasons why our children are not committed to Islam and why they even seem to be repulsed from coming to the masjid and getting involved in Islamic activities at all. His reasons may be shocking as he puts the Muslim community on the spot by sharing his findings from an un-scientific yet revealing survey of Muslim youth in this country. Is the media or some "Western conspiracy" really driving our children, or even non-Muslims, away from Islam? Is it possible that what's driving them away is us, the Muslims?! In answering these questions, Dr. Lang seeks in this lecture to wake up those who claim to be Muslim and offers sincere advice to those who are contributing to the "clash" between the surrounding culture and the religious sub-culture that our youth are asked to be a part of. A riveting talk that is a must for every Muslim, especially those living in America.
Other topics discussed: women's roles in the community and the perception of their subjugation, the intellectual divide (rationalism vs. tradition) in our communities, keeping the community unified, concrete ways to make a change within yourself, overcoming lethargic attitudes, and sending our children abroad to study Islam.
