The Surface Sand Boa Project

Can we breed a Kenyan sand boa that chooses not to hide?

The Surface Sand Boa Project is a father-daughter, multi-year behavior study. It started when Breathitt, age six, decided to become a reptile veterinarian and fell in love with a snake that spends most of its life underground. She noticed not every sand boa hides the same amount. We're going to measure that, properly, across generations.

About 20 founding snakes from roughly 10 unrelated bloodlines. Identical enclosures with plenty of substrate to burrow in. Cameras watching around the clock. Every measurement published, including the ones that prove us wrong.

We have no results yet. We're building the observation system now and documenting it here from the beginning: rack construction, camera tests, protocol drafts, mistakes, and eventually the snakes themselves.

Phase I research is funded on Experiment.com. Animal welfare comes before experimental consistency, always.
