The Paradox: Black Veteran Conversations

The Paradox: Black Veteran Conversations is a weekly audio-and-video series of candid dialogues that examine the Black Veteranality paradox — the condition of being invoked as evidence of national virtue while being denied the belonging, protection, and credibility that virtue is supposed to confer. Hosted by Dr. Bryon L. Garner, U.S. Navy veteran and author of Black Veteranality (Routledge, 2025), each episode pairs testimony, historical archive, and current events with a real conversation — between Dr. Garner and a guest, or among a panel of Black veterans — moving listeners from feeling the paradox to doing something about it. The show is built as a space where Black veterans can speak candidly with and to one another, not just be spoken about.
