From Adam's original SIN, we are all born sinners with a fallen nature. Our heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). Without Christ's perfect sacrifice on the cross as payment for sins, we would never be able to avoid the eternal torment of the lake of fire as just punishment for our transgressions. God has to punish sin, otherwise he would be corrupt and unjust.
