The Samuel DuBois Cook Center

The Samuel DuBois Cook Center is a scholarly collaborative that studies the causes and consequences of inequality and develops remedies for these disparities and their adverse effects. The Cook Center is named after Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook, the first African American tenured professor to join the Duke faculty and lifetime human rights activist and civil servant. 

Concerned with the economic, political, social and cultural dimensions of uneven access to resources, opportunity and capabilities, Cook Center researchers take a cross-national comparative approach to the study of human difference and disparity.

The Cook Center is directed by William "Sandy" Darity, Jr., a professor of economics, public policy and African American Studies. Prof. Darity is best known for advocating for a federal job guarantee, baby bonds and Black reparations.
